Discovering our Values
Values are the ideas we hold dearest, what we prioritize, and what we strive towards. They
can help shape our actions, decisions, and behaviors. Sometimes, our actions and values
do not align, and that may cause discontent in our lives. Below are many examples of
values. You can rank every value, or just mark all the values that feel most important to you
(and rank them if you want.) There’s some blank boxes at the end to fill in other values that
are not listed.
Ranking: on a scale of 1-5, 1 being not important at all, 5 being of utmost importance.

After identifying your values above, some questions you can ask yourself:
What does this value mean- dictionary definition, or to me personally?
How do I know when I am acting in alignment with this value? What actions, feelings,
thoughts, and behaviors are in alignment with this value? How about when I’m NOT acting
in alignment with this value?
Can I think of anyone, real or fictional, that is a good representation of this value? Why?
What would my life look like if I ALWAYS acted in alignment with this value? What about if I
NEVER did?
Where did I learn this value (friends, family, society, etc)?
Why is it so important to me?
Example:
Value: Growth
To me personally, growth means challenging yourself to learn more about the world and
myself. I know I am acting in alignment when I’m excited and curious about a new topic,
spend a lot of time thinking and reading and talking about it. I am not aligned when I am
not actively searching new knowledge, or think I know it all. Someone I think is a good
representation of growth is my best friend because she is always questioning the world
around her, likes trying new things, and loves signing up for interesting classes. I think I
learned this value from my mom who always encouraged me to be learning. It is important
to me because I don’t want to get stuck and stagnant.
