Synchronous Machines: Problem Set

1. A 230 V, 4 pole, 50Hz, star-connected synchronous motor has ra  jX s  0.6  j3.0 Ω per phase.
Its field current is so adjusted that motor draws 10 A at upf from rated voltage source. Now with
the field current unchanged, the load on the motor is increased till it draws 40 A from the supply.
Find the torque developed and the new pf.
[Answer: 78.45 Nm, 0.954 lag]
2. A 6.6. kV star-connected 3-phase synchronous motor works at constant voltage and constant
excitation. Its synchronous impedance is 1.5+j12 Ω per phase. When the input power is 1000 kW,
the pf is 0.8 leading. Find the pf when input is increased to 1500 kW.
[Answer: 0.9161 lead]
3. A 20 MVA, 3-phase star-connected 11kV, 12 pole, 50 Hz, star-connected 11 kV, 12 pole, 50 Hz
salient-pole synchronous motor, with negligible armature resistance, has reactances of X d = 5 Ω
and X q =3 Ω. At full load, unity power-factor and rated voltage, compute:
(a) The excitation voltage.
(b) Power (and check the result).
(c) Synchronizing power per electrical degree and the corresponding torque.
(d) Synchronizing power per mechanical degree and the corresponding torque.
(e) Maximum value of power-angle δ and the corresponding power.
[Answer: 3022 V, 20010 kW, 647 kW, 12360 Nm, 3882 kW, 74160 Nm, 67.85o 33,975 kW]
4. A 3000 kVA, 3-phase, star-connected, 6,600 volt, 8-pole, 50 Hz alternator has a synchronous
reactance of 20% and is running in parallel with infinite bus. Calculate the synchronizing power and
the corresponding synchronizing torque per mechanical degree of phase displacement (a) at no-load
and (b) at full load, 0.8 power-factor lagging.
[Answer: 1048 kW, 13,340 Nm, 1173 kW, 14,930 Nm]
5. A 100 kVA, 440 V, 3-phase, star-connected alternator has the following data :
Friction and windage loss = 340 watts.
Open-circuit core loss = 480 watts.
Field winding resistance at 75 Co
= 180 Ω.
Effective armature resistance per phase = 0.02 Ω.
The voltage applied to the field winding is 220 V. Calculate the alternator efficiency at 0.8
p.f. and at
(a) half full load and
(b) full load.
