Introduction to Consumer Rights
Consumer rights refer to the set of rights every consumer has while buying goods or
services. In a developing country like India, where markets are rapidly growing, these
rights become very important. A consumer must be aware of what they are entitled to so
they do not get cheated or exploited. The concept of consumer rights is to ensure fair
treatment, safety, and redressal in the marketplace. This project will explain various
consumer rights and how we can protect ourselves using laws and awareness.
Who is a Consumer?
A consumer is a person who buys goods or services for personal use and not for resale or
commercial purposes. Under the Consumer Protection Act, a consumer is defined as
someone who purchases goods or avails services in exchange for money. For example, if
someone buys a mobile phone for personal use, they are a consumer. But if they buy 100
phones to sell them, they are a seller, not a consumer. Understanding who qualifies as a
consumer is the first step toward knowing your rights.
What are Consumer Rights?
Consumer rights are the claims that consumers can make to ensure fair treatment in the
market. These include the right to safety, right to information, right to choose, and several
others. These rights are designed to protect consumers from unfair trade practices,
defective products, and unethical behavior by sellers. The Consumer Protection Act
ensures these rights are upheld, and violators are punished. Educating the public about
their rights is key to a healthy market system.
