REPORT ON FOURTH QUARTER REFRESHER TRAINING FOR SECURITY


PERSONNEL

1. INTRODUCTION

As part of ongoing efforts to enhance campus safety and strengthen the professionalism of the
security personnel, a two-day refresher training programme was organized on 9th and 10th
December 2025 at the GIMPA PSMTP Lecture Hall. I had the privilege of facilitating this
training session.

The primary objective of the programme was to refresh the security team’s knowledge, reinforce
their operational skills, and re-emphasize the responsibilities associated with maintaining a safe,
secure, and orderly campus environment.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING

The refresher training focused on the following key areas:

a. Enhancing personal safety in the execution of daily duties.


b. Improving health and fitness, training certification, physical safety, and effective use of
security equipment.
c. Addressing critical issues such as communication, safety inspections, and fire action
procedures.

Overall, the aim was to develop a more alert, responsive, and professional security workforce.

3. TRAINING SCHEDULE AND TOPICS COVERED

The training session commenced at 9:30 a.m. and covered essential topics relevant to the daily
operations of the security personnel. Below is a summary of the programme schedule:

Opening Introduction – 9:30 a.m.

Topic: Personal Safety and Fire Action (Part Two)

1. Personal Safety – 9:30 – 9:45


2. Health and Fitness – 9:45 – 10:00
3. Training and Certification – 10:00 – 10:15
4. Fire Safety and Evacuation – 10:15 – 10:30
5. Physical Safety – 10:30 – 10:45
6. Use of Equipment – 10:45 – 11:00
7. Communication – 11:00 – 11:20
8. Safety Inspection – 11:20 – 11:35
9. Break – 11:35 – 11:50
10. Conclusion – 11:50 – 12:05
11. Open Forum – 12:05 – 12:45
12. Closing – 12:45

4. OBSERVATIONS

The training session was successful and well received. The security personnel in attendance were
attentive, open, and eager to learn. Discussions were lively, with active participation from all
participants. Real-life scenarios were used to enhance understanding and practical application of
concepts.

A key observation was that many guards showed strong willingness to improve their
performance but required clearer guidelines and consistent reminders. The structured approach of
the training helped reinforce expectations and best practices.

5. RECOMMENDATIONS

To sustain the gains achieved from this training, the following recommendations are proposed:

1. Quarterly Training: Refresher training should be organized every three months to


maintain high operational standards.
2. Campus Lighting: Management is advised to review and improve the lighting system
across the campus to enhance security.
3. Specialized Topics: Future training sessions should address issues such as punctuality,
professional approaches to individuals, and staff development.
4. Performance Tracking: A simple assessment system should be developed to evaluate
the impact of training on daily security operations.

6. CONCLUSION

The refresher training programme was timely and impactful. It provided the security personnel
with renewed motivation and reinforced the importance of discipline, alertness, and
professionalism. As GIMPA continues to expand, the security unit must equally evolve to meet
emerging challenges and opportunities. This training represents a positive step in that direction,
and I look forward to continuing to support the unit with my experience and expertise.
Some other challenges were that, suggestions and opinions of personnel’ are seen and treated as
attacks by their superiors which makes it difficult for personnel to share their experiences and
challenges.

It requires aligning assessment metrics with day-to-day operational activities to measure the effectiveness of training truly .

The report suggests that management should review and enhance the lighting system across the campus as a measure to improve overall security, as better lighting can deter potential intruders and enhance visibility for security operations .

Including real-life scenarios in training sessions is beneficial because it helps enhance understanding and practical application of concepts, enabling security personnel to relate theoretical knowledge to actual experiences and thereby improving their readiness and responsiveness in real situations .

Challenges of organizing quarterly refresher training sessions might include resource allocation, scheduling conflicts, ensuring consistent attendance, and maintaining engagement and morale among personnel, which may require careful planning and coordination to address effectively .
