Selection Guide

SELECTION GUIDE FOR KGI SELF-DIRECTING AXES

The information published below is intended to assist in the determination of the

proper axle configuration for use with the most common air suspensions.

There are four key characteristics to determine the configuration of a Self-Aligning Axis:

Type of Suspension.
The Client must choose the type of suspension they will use. In most cases
The self-directing axle will be used in conjunction with rigid axles in the same.
trailer or equipment. In these cases, the goal will be for the types of suspension
they coincide between axes. Once the type of suspension is determined, it is possible to continue
with the axis configuration.
2. Tire configuration.
Selecting the appropriate directional axis configuration largely depends on
way if the team and above all the same axis will have double wheels or
sencillas. La longitud del eje así como sus componentes cambiarán dependiendo de
the selection of wheels (double - single). The axles with single wheels will be more
longer and will carry a wider mace compared to the doubles, taking into account
consideration of the total length required.

Regularly, the track for double wheels is 77-1/2.

The regular track for single wheels is 84-3/4.
3. Configuration of Spikes.
Generally, the configuration of the spike is chosen according to the preference of the
client. So that the axis configuration matches the rest of the axes of the

In the P configuration of straight pins, there is a pair of bearings of the same type.
measure, interior and exterior (HM518445).

The appropriate setting of the axis will depend on the selection of pins.

4. Steering damping system.
KGI mainly offers 2 types of steering dampers.

Centering Damping System with Air Bag (ABDS)

This system features an airbag mounted at the center of the axle.
as a steering damper. This system is more complex than
the damping system because it has a greater
number of components, but at the same time provides several advantages with
regarding it in its performance:
- Adjustable damping pressure – Because of the resistance
the cushioning depends on the air pressure of the system, to the
the air pressure can adjust the resistance of
damping depending on the service conditions
taking into account the specific team and work environment.
Paths with low traction will require less resistance from
damping while the roads with good traction
they will require greater resistance. The objective of the above is
allow the axle to turn without dragging the tires due to a greater
damping resistance to what is necessary and at the same time avoid the
wheel balancing due to lack of resistance
damping.
- Constant resistance - With the proper use of air tanks the
The system will provide a constant damping resistance.
2. Shock Absorber System.
This system uses a pair of shock absorbers connected to the
respective spike assemblies. When the axis turns one of the
shock absorbers contract while the other extends. The advantages
the following are from this system:
- No maintenance required - This is the damping system
simpler since it only has two pieces
replaceable due to wear. Once the lifespan limit is reached
the shock absorbers can be replaced with
facility.
- No adjustments are necessary - The only adjustment needed in that
the system is to verify during installation that the stops of
Address, located at the base of the spikes of the axis, should be within
of the limit of the shock absorbers. Thanks to the above
the operator's involvement can be dispensed with
system.

Número de Configuración KGI

The KGI Configuration Number is the number assigned to a specific configuration of

eje. Este número de configuración enmarca las especificaciones base del producto final (suspensión
required, wheel and tire configuration, spike configuration, type of system
steering dampening), this does not take into account accessories such as hubs, drums,
brake cameras, etc...

When a Customer places an order for an Axis, a reference number is assigned to it.
with the specifications required by KGI. Occasionally, it may happen that a client requires
of various axes with the same base specifications but with different accessories, in these cases
the KGI Configuration Number will remain the same for all axes but they will have
a different Customer Part Number. It is for the above reason that KGI retains the Numbers
From the Clients in each work order that pass through our facilities, this allows
avoid confusion and facilitate order tracking.

Notes:

In addition to the product displayed in this document, KGI has a varied catalog of
directional and self-directional axles for different applications such as: special trailers,
tractors, dollies, mobile equipment, etc.

- KGI can manufacture shafts of almost any required length.

- We strive to meet the special requirements of our clients.
with unique applications and work environments.
- We have a wide degree of flexibility that provides an excellent
opportunity for equipment manufacturers to achieve performance characteristics
for their products without having to deal with limitations from
of the axis.

Steering Stops

Note: The steering stops are factory calibrated; however, they may be
only calibrated to prevent contact between the tires or air chambers with the

Rotate the axis direction in both
senses to verify if there is any
interference.

Turn the steering stop, located at

the inner face of the assembly of the
spike, towards the stump to reduce the
angle of rotation.

Note: For axles equipped with shock absorbers

of address.
The axis is calibrated for the largest angle
from factory turnover. Adjusting the stop of
direction towards the center of the assembly of the
spike (to increase the turning angle) from
the factory position can cause over
extension and failure of the shock absorbers. Review
the maintenance guide for the system of
shock absorber direction for calibration in
its maximum recommended extension.

Address Bar Adjustment
Note: During regular maintenance of the Trailer and/or the Axle, it may be necessary to check and/or
readjust the address bar of the axis.

Wear of the King Pin and Bushings
Notes:

The KGS 250 STD axles come with a factory positive camber to compensate for the
deflection of the center of the axis when loaded.
The above helps to reduce tire wear under normal conditions of
load.
Based on the routine monitoring of maintenance and lubrication procedures,
The king pin and bushings must have uniform wear on the top and bottom.
As the wear of the King Pin and bushings increases, the deflection and wear of the
tires as well.

Review of the wear of the King Pin and Bushings

2. Connect the needle of the dial indicator with the arm of the spindle assembly.
3. Manually move the pin up and down to obtain the maximum reading from the indicator
of the cover.
4. If the reading of the dial indicator is greater than 0.030", the King Pin and bushings must be
changed. (Under these conditions, the operator may become aware of a greater
wear on the tires.)

Maximum Reading 0.030”

Note: KGI recommends that the king pin and bushings be replaced upon obtaining a measurement of
excessive wear. Periodic lubrication is essential to extend the lifespan of the King Pin
and bushings. See page 20 for installation and replacement procedure of the King Pin.

Tighten the bolts to 50 lb-ft following the previous sequence.

2. Check that the wheel sits correctly on the hub and does not interfere with its guides.
3. Tighten the bolts to the recommended torque following the previous sequence.
a. The required torque depends on the bolts provided on each axle.
b. The recommended torque for M22X1.5 bolts is: 450 – 50 lb-ft.

Note: Check the torque of the bolts after 100 - 150 km (50 - 100 miles) after service.
