In the mid-1950s, American manufacturers, noticing the great demand for cars,
it produced an increase in mass production, they decided to identify their vehicles by stamping initials on the
same and its pieces.
In the early 1980s, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (Department
of transport of the United States), ordered that all vehicles must contain 17 in their chassis number
alphanumeric digits, as can be seen in most brands today and that consists of
identification card. The purpose is to identify automobiles, trailers, motorcycles, and mopeds.
Such abbreviation must be stamped in a legible, unalterable, and durable manner. It is stamped or minted.

The VIN number consists of three sections, according to ISO 3779 standard of 1983:

digits 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 VIS

it clarifies the region where the rolling was manufactured
With the first digit, we know for sure which continent the vehicle comes from.
Digit 2:
The second digit indicates the country of manufacture.
Digit 3:
Indicates the vehicle manufacturer within the country. This character, if it were number 9, means that the manufacturer produces
fewer than 500 vehicles per model.
With the combination of the first three characters, the identification of the country is unique.
The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) subsequently standardized the use following the ISO 3779 standard for

a model year and/or place of manufacture, these characters are usually found in the first positions of the VIN.
For the model year, it is common to use the 10th digit of the VIN, with a list that most of the

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
What is it?
It is established that the vehicle, apart from the millions of vehicles that are out there.
recent times have been reflected in 17 two-digit characters. It presents the
singularity of a car and the heritage and provides a way of 'factory for the
identification "patio scrap". It can be used to track the withdrawal, records,
warranty claims, thefts, and insurance coverage. Each character or digit has a
specific purpose.
The Vehicle Identification Number was originally described in the ISO standard 3779 in
February 1977 and last reviewed in 1983. The ISO-VIN standard was designed to
identify motor vehicles, trailers, motorcycles, and mopeds and consists of
varias partes que se describen a continuación.
The first character identifies the country where the vehicle was manufactured.
For example: USA (1 or 4), Canada (2), Mexico (3), Japan (J), Korea (K), England (S),
Germany (W), Italy (Z)
The second character identifies the manufacturer. For example, Audi (A),
BMW (B), Buick (4), Cadillac (6), Chevrolet (1), Chrysler (C), Dodge (B),
Ford (F), GM Canadá (7), General Motors (G), Honda (H), Jaquar (A), Lincoln (L),
["Mercedes-Benz (D)","Mercurio (M)","Nissan (N)","Oldsmobile (3)","Pontiac (2 or 5)","Plymouth"]
(P), Saturn (8), Toyota (T), VW (V), Volvo (V).
The third character identifies the type of vehicle or the manufacturing division.
Character 9 - The check digit 'character or digit 9' in the sequence of a number
vehicle identification number (VIN) from the model year built in 1981 (when
the 17-digit character format was created) can be better described as the
identification of VIN accuracy.
A check digit will be part of each VIN (since 1981) and will appear in position
nine (9) of the VIN on the vehicle and in the transfer documents that contain
the VIN prepared by the manufacturer must be provided to the first owner for the purposes
that is not resale. Thus, the wines from either of the two vehicles manufactured at 30
The period of one year will not be identical. The control digit means a single number or a letter.
After all the other characters in the VIN have been determined by the manufacturer
the control digit is calculated through a mathematical calculation
specified. This is based on the position of vin, sample vin, assigned code a

weight factor and are multiplied assigned times the value of the weight factors. The values
they are added together and the total is divided by 11. The remainder is the control digit.
The correct numeric remainder - from zero to nine (0-9) will appear.
However, if the remainder is 10, the letter 'X' is used to denote the check.
digits value / number.
10th character identifies the year of the model. For example: 1988 (J), 1989 (K), 1990 (L),
1991 (M), 1992 (N), 1993 (P), 1994 (I), 1995 (S), 1996 (T),
1997 (V), 1998 (W), 1999 (X), 2000 (Y) ------ 2001 (1), 2002 (2), 2003 (3)

Secondly, seek the weighting factor for each position in the VIN, except for the
9th (the position of the check digit).
Thirdly, the numbers and the numerical values of the letters are multiplied by their
assigned weighting factor, and sum the resulting products. Divide the sum of the
products by 11. The remainder is the check digit. If the remainder is 10, the verification digit
it is the letter X. valid check digits are also run through the numbers of
zero to nine.
