Types and Advantages of Industrial Grinders
Surface grinder
The anglicism 'Surface Grinder' is commonly used to refer to the flat grinder.
This term implies, in current technical usage, the rectification of surfaces that are
essentially flat. Several methods of flat correction are adapted and used
to produce surfaces characterized by elements in straight parallel lines and in
angles. Naturally, one can obtain precision surfaces that can consist of
long and straight pieces at different angles (like the carriage guides of a lathe, some
blades of all kinds and tools for example). In other cases, curved surfaces are obtained or
profiled.
The third type of grinder is a surface grinder, but it is equipped with a table.
rotating plane. Often used for surfacing saw blades and industrial knives.
Advantages of the surface grinder
Alternative methods for machining surfaces similar to those obtained with a
Grinder is the use of a milling machine and to a much more limited degree, the 'Planer'.
the grinder does have a clear advantage over alternative methods in terms of
concerning cutting tools. Here are examples of potential advantages:
1. Rectifier is applicable on hard or abrasive material without significant effect on
the effectiveness of material removal.
The desired shape and the dimensional level of the surface to be worked on can be
obtained at a higher degree and in a more consistent manner.
3. Surfaces of very high precision finish, when using the system
appropriate, are produced.
4. The tooling costs for a grinder are relatively cheaper than the others.
machine tools.
5. The fixing of the parts is generally very simple. Particularly, for the parts
magnetic (for example in carbon steel), when a magnetic plate (at
permanent magnets) or electromagnetic (with electromagnets) is installed on the table
of the grinder.
The movement of the table during work can be longitudinal (parallel to the plane of
rotation of the millstone) generally in a back-and-forth motion, or in continuous rotation. The movement
longitudinal can be accompanied either by a transverse movement, to rectify a
rectangular surface wider than the width of the grinding wheel without altering the
height of the machine's spindle, that is, a vertical movement without motion
transversal, for example to machine a groove.
Internal Grinder: The machine allows for the grinding of the internal parts of the workpiece.
cylindrical (see tower article).
External Grinder: The machine allows for grinding the external parts of the
cylindrical piece (see article lathe).
Inter/Outer Grinder: The machine allows for grinding the inner and outer parts.
outer surfaces of the cylindrical piece.
Centerless grinder: The centerless grinder has a principle of operation
different from traditional cylindrical grinders (see figure 6). The workpiece to be ground
is set between the blade and the regulating wheel. The rotation of the regulating wheel
causes the rotation of the machined part. A counter-rotation is imposed on the grinding wheel.
to carry out the rectification operation.
An excerpt from the overall drawing of a surface grinder is provided in document 1 and its
nomenclature on document 2. In this example, the following advance movements and
of balayage following are given at the table and the following approach movement to
grinding wheel (not represented in the drawing).
