The Sibling Success Study: An Interview & Analysis Assignment


1. Goal:
- Investigate, through primary interviews and secondary research, the
perceived advantages and disadvantages of different birth orders (First,
Middle, Youngest/Last) and
- determine which order is perceived to achieve "better success" (defined
by the group) within the family unit. Finally,
- present the findings in a 3-minute video with visual aids.
2. Research & Data Collection
Phase A: Defining "Success"
 Group Task: The group must first spend 5 minutes defining what
"success in the family" means for the purpose of this exercise. (e.g.,
Financial stability, emotional closeness to parents, leadership roles,
achievement of educational goals, etc.)
Phase B: Primary Research - The Interviews with family members
 The Task: Each group member interviews at least 3 persons (parents,
siblings, relatives).
 Mandatory Interview Questions:
1. What is your birth order (First, Middle, Youngest/Last)?
2. Based on your experience, what is the greatest advantage of
your birth order?
3. What is the greatest disadvantage or challenge you faced due to
your birth order?
4. Who among your siblings do you believe has achieved the most
"success" (as the group defined it in Phase A) within the family, and
why?
Phase C: Secondary Research - Quick Facts
 Data from the Lecture: collect information from the Lecture, chapter 7,
with respect to Success, advantages and disadvantages for each birth
order.
 Data from readings: collect information from at least two articles from
internet.
3. Analysis & Scripting
 Group Task: The group pools their interview data and secondary
research.
1. Categorize: List the top 2-3 Advantages and Disadvantages for
the First, Middle, and Youngest child, based on their collected data.
You should put them in a chart for comparison/ contrast.
2. Conclusion: Based on the interviews and research, the group must
come to a consensus on which birth order they believe "gains
better success in the family" and formulate a clear, evidence-
based argument for their choice.
3. Scripting: Write a brief, structured script for the recording.
5. The Final Presentation with visual aids (slides)
 Format: A single, continuous audio or video recording (maximum 3
minutes).
 Structure: The recording must include the following elements, clearly
introduced:
1. (0:00 - 0:30) Introduction: State the group's definition of
"success" and briefly introduce the group members' roles.
2. (0:30 - 1:30) The Evidence: Present the main Advantages and
Disadvantages identified for each birth order (using
quotes/paraphrases from the interviews as evidence).
3. (1:30 - 2:30) The Verdict & Argument: State the group's final
conclusion—Which birth order gained "better success" in the family,
and why? This must be the strongest part of the presentation, using
both interview and research findings.
4. (2:30 - 3:00) Conclusion: A final thought on how birth order
affects family dynamics.
6. Deadline: By 23:59, 01st December, 2025.
