Electricity
and Circuits
Electrical energy is one of the most common
and most useful forms of energy. Circuits in
electrical devices allow electricity use with a flip
of a switch.
THINK ABOUT IT
How do RL circuits work?
An RL circuit works by using an inductor to
oppose changes in current, storing energy
in a magnetic field, and a resistor to
dissipate energy, with its behavior
dependent on the circuit's frequency and
time constant.
What makes a circuit?
Electrical Voltage
Conductor Switch
device source
material that controls the
converts allows current to source of electricity, current flow
electrical energy flow such as batteries or
into another form electric outlets
Working principle
The switch closes, energy will be stored in the inductor.
After a long time, the circuit reaches a
steady state so the current in the circuit
became constant.(dI/dt=0)
Since dI/dt=0 the voltage across the
inductor becomes zero.
And because there is no voltage across
it the inductor became a wire.
This energy is concentrated in the magnetic field
surrounding the inductor.
Working principle
When the switch opens, the current in the inductor decreases gradually.
Because of the change in current.
Working principle
The lamp is bright for a little while then goes off.
Application
Energy Storage in Magnetic Fields
DC Motor Speed Control with RL Circuit
Description:
Inductors store energy in magnetic
fields and release it when needed, as
seen in relays, solenoids, and
electromagnetic actuators.
Application
Energy Storage in Magnetic Fields
The switch has been in the closed position

circuit. So the voltage across the inductor is
zero.
The current in the inductor is
The current in R(1) is zero and the energy stored in the
magnetic field is

In here the switch is opened t = 0. The switch opens,

in the inductor as before the
switch was opened since you can't change the current
in an ideal inductor instantaneously (in zero time). So
the current in R(1) is the same as current in the
inductor . The inductor is now delivering energy to the
resistor which is dissipated as heat.
Eventually becoming zero when all the energy that was stored
in the magnetic field is dissipated as heat in R(1)
