square of x. It is given that g(–1) = –117 and g(9) = 203.

(a) Find g(–5). (3 marks)

(b) C(5 , c) and D(–5 , d) are points lying on the graph of y = g(x). Find the area of ABCD,
where A and B are two distinct points at which the graph cuts the x-axis. (4 marks)

remainder are 10x2  17x + m and mx + 53 respectively, where m is a constant.

(a) Find m. (3 marks)

(b) Is x  4 a factor of f(x)? Explain your answer. (1 mark)

(c) Someone claims that all the roots of the equation f(x) = 0 are positive numbers. Do you

4. The stem-and-leaf diagram below shows the distribution of the ages of the doctors in a hospital.

Stem (tens) Leaf (units)

2 8 9 9
3 2 4 7 7
4 3 3 3 5 6 6 9
5 0 0 2 4 5 a

It is given that the range of the above distribution is 30.

(a) Find the mean and the standard deviation of the distribution. (3 marks)

(b) Two more doctors now join the hospital. It is found that the mean and the range of the
distribution of the ages are increased by 1 and 2 respectively. Find the age of each of these
two doctors. (4 marks)
