Why Sustainability
Matters
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges
facing the world today.
Cities produce a large amount of greenhouse gas
emissions that contribute to global warming.
Mathematics can help us understand and solve
real environmental problems.
Our project focuses on how Riyadh can reduce its
carbon emissions over time.
The Problems
• Climate change is causing rising temperatures
around the world.

• Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing due


to human activity.

• Burning fossil fuels leads to air pollution and


global warming.

• Many cities face challenges like heat waves,


water shortages, and poor air quality.

• If we don’t act, these problems will get worse


over time.
The Challenge
In Riyadh
Riyadh emits about 278 million tons of CO₂
per year from electricity, transport, and
industry.
High temperatures increase energy demand,
adding more emissions.
Traffic and construction worsen air pollution.
Without action, air quality, water supply, and
public health are at risk.
Saudi Green Initiative aims for a 30% CO₂
reduction by 2030.
Riyadh Currently

Green Space: The current per capita share of


green space in the city is very low, at only 1.7 m2.

Waste: Approximately 5% of municipal solid


waste is sorted monthly at the Sulail Landfill's
sorting facility.

Air Quality: Air quality in Riyadh remains a


significant concern due to rapid growth, with the
city's air quality monitored by 17 stations.
Here’s the chart showing Green Riyadh’s CO₂ emissions reduction over time, from
45 million tons in 2010 to 21.6 million tons by 2050. It visually highlights the
sharp decline after 2025 when the Green Riyadh Initiative begins, marking the
shift from growth to exponential reduction.
