Rattrap and The phrase
"Escaping Reality – The Search
for Peace in a Busy World"

The phrase "Escaping Reality – The

Search for Peace in a Busy World"
connects directly with the central themes
of the chapter "The Rattrap" by Selma
Lagerlöf. The story's protagonist, the
peddler, embodies this very idea through
his journey from a life of hardship and
cynicism to a moment of peace and
redemption.
The World as a "Busy"
and Unkind Place
● The peddler's life is a constant
struggle of poverty and
loneliness. He is a vagabond who
resorts to begging and petty
theft to survive. This reflects the
"busy world" as a harsh, un-
nurturing environment where he
is constantly met with "sour
faces" and rejection. He is
trapped in a cycle of survival,
which is a form of being caught in
the world's "rattrap"
Escaping Reality through
Cynicism

● The peddler's philosophy that the

world is a giant rattrap is his initial
form of escaping reality. He finds a
"cherished pastime" in thinking ill of
the world and other people, which
provides him a sense of bitter joy and
intellectual superiority over those who
are yet to be caught by the "bait" of
riches and pleasures. This cynical
worldview allows him to detach
himself from his own miserable
circumstances.
The Search for Peace

● The peddler's stay at the ironmaster's house,

facilitated by Edla Willman son's genuine
kindness, becomes his unexpected escape
and a search for peace. Edla's unconditional
compassion and trust give him a sense of
dignity and belonging he has never
experienced before. He is given clean clothes,
good food, and, most importantly, a peaceful
night's rest without fear or suspicion. Edla's
kindness ultimately helps him break free
from the mental and moral trap he was in.
Moral Value
In the story, the author Selma
Lagerlof conveys a definite
message. The story has a
universal appeal. The
essential goodness in a
human being never dies. It
can be awakened through
understanding and love. Miss
Edla awakens the basic
goodness of the peddler. He is
transformed into a noble
person in the end.
