CHAPTER 5

Introduction

In this chapter we will discuss the research conclusions of each research objective, research
recommendations to address any problems found, recommendations for further research studies
and the summary.

Research Conclusions

Assessing the Effectiveness of Debit Cards in Delivering Satisfaction

When it comes to delivering satisfaction to customers, debit cards more or less achieve this but
they could do so much better. Out of a total satisfaction score of 800, debit cards have a net
satisfaction score of 538 which would put the satisfaction of respondents at 67% out of 100%.
This is not a bad score but could definitely use some improving as most customers as shown by
the data are not necessarily impressed by the service they are receiving.

Exploring the Benefits of Debit Cards

Debit cards do indeed provide benefits to customers as seen in the research results. The main
benefits derived from debit cards are ATM withdrawals, convenience when making purchases,
security by avoiding carrying money around and budgeting purposes.

Analyzing Challenges from Debit Cards

As seen in the data collected, most respondents said that the challenges they have faced have led
them to have decreased their satisfaction with debit cards moderately. These include network and
transactions, hidden charges, unavailability of POS, card loss and theft, and customer service.

Research recommendations

There is a need for banks to improve on network and transaction issues as this is the issue that
most respondents seem to face.
Following this, banks must also improve on their transparency regarding charges made on debit
cards

Banks must also come up with ways to guard against card loss or theft that can protect
customers.

An initiative must be taken to improve the availability of POS systems across shops so that
holders of debit cards can actually get to use them.

Banks must also improve their customer service in order to ensure that when customers have an
issue, their problems are resolved quickly and effectively so that they are satisfied

Recommendation for further studies

Apology

While respondent academic year was unintentionally omitted, this variable could influence
interpretations of the findings of the research. Future research should prioritize this demographic
to assess the effects.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The benefits of using debit cards include ATM withdrawals, convenience in making purchases, security benefits from avoiding carrying physical cash, and aiding in budgeting purposes. These factors positively impact customer satisfaction by offering safety and ease of transaction. However, challenges such as network and transaction issues, hidden charges, unavailability of POS, card loss and theft, and poor customer service lead to moderate decreases in satisfaction. These challenges impede the seamless experience and reliability expected by customers, thus impacting the net satisfaction score, which stands at 67% of total satisfaction .

Customer service plays a crucial role in debit card user satisfaction as it represents the institution's responsiveness to customer issues. Efficient service enhances customer perceptions and retention by solving problems users face swiftly and satisfactorily. Banks can enhance customer service by training staff to address inquiries or complaints effectively, implementing faster response systems, and utilizing feedback to adjust services in real-time. Ensuring a high level of customer service can make users feel valued and secure in their use of debit cards, thereby improving satisfaction scores .

The convenience provided by debit cards significantly influences user satisfaction by facilitating quick and easy payment processes without carrying cash. To maintain or enhance this, banks should ensure consistent and reliable transaction networks, increase the acceptance of cards via more POS systems, and improve mobile or online banking interfaces. Additionally, offering 24/7 customer support and seamless integration with budgeting tools can enhance the convenience experience. Prioritising these areas can deepen user relationships by meeting the demands of modern life .

Transaction network issues can erode trust between debit card users and financial institutions as these issues directly affect the reliability of transactions, leading to user frustration. Hidden charges further exacerbate this issue as they suggest a lack of transparency from the financial institutions. This combination can lead to decreased satisfaction as customers may feel misled or improperly informed about the costs of using debit card services, thereby negatively impacting their relationship with the banks .

Measures to prevent card loss or theft are likely to increase customer satisfaction by directly addressing concerns about financial security. This reassurance can lead to a stronger trust relationship with the financial institution. Strategies that financial institutions can employ include implementing advanced authentication technologies, such as biometric verification or two-factor authentication, offering card insurance products, and setting up instant reporting systems for lost or stolen cards. These steps can enhance the user experience by reducing anxiety associated with potential financial loss .

Improving the availability of POS systems is crucial for enhancing debit card user satisfaction because it directly influences the ease and frequency of card usage. When POS systems are widely available, users can utilize their debit cards more conveniently during purchases, which enhances the utility and practicality of having a debit card. Limited access to POS systems can frustrate users as it restricts the primary function of payment cards, thus reducing satisfaction levels .

Transparency regarding transaction charges is crucial in strengthening customer relationships as it builds trust between users and financial institutions. When customers clearly understand the charges involved, they are less likely to feel misled, leading to higher satisfaction and loyalty. Hidden charges can result in customer dissatisfaction and erosion of trust, driving users away to more transparent competitors. Therefore, clarity and honesty in financial dealings are fundamental for sustaining positive relationships and customer retention .

Financial institutions can improve customer satisfaction by addressing network and transaction reliability issues to provide a more seamless user experience. They should enhance transparency regarding any charges to build trust with customers. Developing robust measures to prevent card loss or theft, like improved card technologies or insurance products, will also protect user confidence. Increasing the availability of POS systems ensures customers can use their debit cards widely, enhancing convenience. Finally, improving customer service to rapidly address and resolve user issues can bolster customer satisfaction .

Future research studies recommended including demographic variables, particularly the academic year of respondents, as these could significantly influence findings and interpretations related to satisfaction. This information might reveal how different age groups or life stages perceive and use debit cards, thereby affecting satisfaction levels. Understanding these segments could help tailor products or services to specific needs and expectations, potentially leading to improved customer satisfaction scores .

The security benefit of debit cards contributes to overall user satisfaction by reducing the risk associated with carrying physical cash, thus providing a safer transaction method. This safety net particularly appeals to users concerned about theft, ensuring their funds are protected even if physical cards are lost or stolen. This perceived security can enhance trust in the financial institution and increase satisfaction as users feel more secure with their transactions .
