Geography Assessment: Development Indicators

The document outlines a rubric-based assessment for 8th-grade geography focusing on development indicators. Students are required to compare a high-income country (HIC) and a low-income country (LIC) using quantitative data and create graphs and mind maps to illustrate their findings. The assessment includes specific tasks and criteria for evaluation related to data presentation, graph interpretation, and cause-and-effect relationships between development indicators.

GEOGRAPHY

(Rubric-Based Assessment)

Class – 8 8th – 13 th October 2025

Reading & planning time: 5 mins

Writing Time : 45 mins Full marks: 24

Name: Section:

Read the passage on development indicators and answer the following questions.

In Geography, Development indicators help determine if a society is moving forward,

identify strengths and weaknesses, and measure the effectiveness of policies over
time. By providing data on various aspects of life, development indicators inform
governments and organizations about what needs to change and guide them in allocating
resources effectively. As the term denotes, a Quantitative Indicator indicates a quantity.
The quantity can be a pure number, an index, ratio or percentage. Quantitative indicators
are very widely used in development programs/projects as they give a very clear
measure of things and are numerically comparable. This enables program/project officials
to compare the performances or achievements of two or more programs/projects.
Moreover, it also allows them to compare the statuses of the same program/project at
different times.

Task - 1A: Choose any one High-Income country (HIC) and the other a Low-Income country
(LIC). Name the countries below.

Country A - HIC ………………………………………………..

Country B - LIC ………………………………………………….

Record the 5-year continuous data from the most recent year available (Do not consider
data beyond 2010), considering the development indicators mentioned in Table 1 on the
following page. Make sure that the data for both countries corresponds to the same years
you've selected. Click on the link shared to access information. [Link]

Task: 1B

Create 2 separate graphs using EXCEL on MS Office / Google sheet for any two chosen
Indicators given, comparing country A and B. Please read the rubric carefully before you
draw the graphs.

Write a brief description of the two graphs based on your observation.

You will be marked on the appropriate conventions needed for a graph, as mentioned
in the Rubric for Level 3.

Task: 2: Create a mind map

Using two mind maps, one for each country A and B, individually, show how one chosen
development indicator from Table 1 (GDP per capita, adult literacy rate, life expectancy,
fertility rate, or infant mortality rate) can influence the levels of the other four indicators.

Your mind map should demonstrate clear connections, cause-and-effect relationships, and
differences between Country A (HIC) and Country B.

You can use Canva, Padlet, or any other chosen platform.
