Introduction:

a/ presenting the topic


Students should be avid users of all types of dictionaries if they want to enrich their language learning process. They are exposed, themselves or through their teachers along their educational life to a Varity of learning tools but they overlook the vital contribution that dictionaries can make in order to effectively learn a foreign language. In this respect, students need to become familiar with the dictionary for a Varity of reasons that this paper will deal with in the upcoming parts. Dictionaries are valuable instrument for students in their learning process; it limits the amount of time a student raises their hands to spell a word, or to wait for the teacher to transcribe it for them. They need to learn that they are able to use a dictionary for spelling and pronouncing words, finding meaning, or distinguishing parts of speech. Thus, this paper tries to shed light on the importance of using dictionaries as an instrument of language teaching and learning.

b/ The rationale
Obviously, teachers tend to neglect dictionaries and their teaching style. They spend a huge amount of time transcribing a particular word, its meaning, and its functiondictionaries can save time and provide lucid illustrations for all these matters. Knowing how to effectively look up a definition in a dictionary is a necessary skill for everyone. And kids are no exception. Dictionaries, with all their kinds, help

students to speak and write accurately, enlarge their lexical repertoire, and understand information they did not understand before. They are handy resource for looking up different meaning, collocations, examples of use and standard pronunciation as well. If students know how to use them effectively, there are hundreds of hours that would be saved for the teacher, and take advantage of them in doing other various activities.

c/ The purpose
The main objective of using dictionaries is to develop the learners autonomy. This instrument can offer students self-guidance in the sense that they become independent I their learning. If students appropriately know how to use dictionaries, there is no doubt that they will establish self-reliance which would later save time for the teacher to manufacture other activities. All students should have dictionaries on their desks. Teachers should initiate students to the use of dictionaries; they need to become familiar with them to the extent of using them on regular basis until they become comfortable with it as a reference. Since todays kids are so accustomed to using computers and are usually familiar with the internet, it makes sense to show them how to use an online dictionary as well. A dictionary is not too difficult to use, and can eventually increase a students chances of achieving high grades on writing as well as speaking assignments. Then, why not encouraging students to use dictionaries in classrooms?
