The Changing Life in Early and Later Vedic Periods

The Vedic Age is often seen as the bridge between the end of the Indus Valley
Civilization and the rise of early kingdoms in India. After the decline of the
Harappan cities—likely due to floods, shifting rivers, climate change, or
invasions—new groups known as Aryans migrated into the Indian subcontinent.
The Aryans spoke Sanskrit and brought with them oral traditions like the Rig Veda,
which was composed around 1500 BCE.

In the Early Vedic Period, Aryans were mostly nomadic. They lived in tribes led by a
rajan (chief), moved from place to place with their cattle, and worshipped nature
gods such as Indra (god of rain), Agni (fire), and Surya (sun). Society was relatively
simple and class divisions were based on occupation.

Over time, during the Later Vedic Period, Aryans began settling in the fertile
Gangetic plains. They started farming with the help of iron tools, built permanent
villages, and developed more structured governments. The king gained more
authority and began performing grand sacrifices like the Ashvamedha to show his
power. The Gurukul system of education trained boys in scriptures, duties, and
discipline. Religion became more ritualistic, and social classes turned into rigid
varnas. New deities such as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva became popular.

These gradual changes in lifestyle, economy, politics, and religion laid the
foundation for classical Indian civilization.
