THE INFORMATION AGE

Introduction

The Information Age is considered a historic period in the 21st century,


characterized by the rapid shift from traditional industry. It is also called
computer age, digital age, and new media age. This age holds a
significant influence as educators and learners maximize the technology.

The invention of the computer is what gave people access to information


with the touch of a button. The Internet has brought closer people to their
tasks such as shopping, paying bills, working, education, entertainment,
and ordering food

The History and Growth of the Information Age

Four Periods of the Information Age:

1. Pre-Mechanical (3000 BC – 1450 AD)

Early tools for communication like writing and alphabets were developed.

2. Mechanical (1450 – 1840)

Inventions like the printing press were created to process and spread
information faster.

3. Electro-Mechanical (1840 – 1940)

Devices like telegraphs, telephones, and early calculators were used.

4. Electronic/Information (1940 – present)


Computers and the internet began and continue to develop today.

FAMOUS INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS

Important people during these periods:

Blaise Pascal, Alexander Graham Bell, Claude Shannon, Bill Gates,


Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak.

Claude Shannon is called the “Father of the Information Age”


because of his work in digital communication.

GROWTH OF THE INTERNET AND COMPUTERS:

1970s: Computers became available for personal and business use.

1980s: Computers became common in homes and offices.

The Information Age is about the fast spread and use of information
using technology. It changed how we learn, work, communicate, and do
business.
