Part One: Digital Community
(Complete this section in Module Three.)
1. Discuss how digital literacy skills help support meaningful connections in digital
communities. Include the following:

B. Why are digital literacy skills important to have when making connections in a
digital community?
Digital literacy skills give the user the ability to understand cultural awareness and to navigate
through a media driven platform with confidence. A huge part of this involves communication
skills and technological proficiency. They are important because one: in certain communities,
the appropriate wording, tone, and response are needed for proper digital etiquette. Knowing
what and what not to share is also an important factor. This ensures that the user can have
proper relationships with people between professional and personal environments.
2. Describe communication strategies that encourage digital connections. Include the
following:
A. How does each strategy encourage digital connections?
B. Does each strategy work all the time? Why or why not?
Communication strategies include thoughtful responses, personal storytelling, and consistent
engagement. Thoughtful responses use respectful language to others to build trust and
respect in the community. Personal storytelling helps others feel seen in a way others can
relate to, while consistent engagement helps keep a community alive while helping others
engage. However, there are downsides to personal storytelling and consistent engagement.
One, some personal information told may make others uncomfortable and change the way
they think about the individual, while in consistent engagement, not everyone will respond
back, and people may get tired of seeing the same interactions or posts popping up in their
feed.
3. Compare the skills used to engage in both a digital and in-person community.
Digital and in-person communities both use communication to engage. Both require
respectful language and tone; however, they are much more pronounced in person rather
than digital, and relies more on body language, verbal and non-verbal cues. In a digital world,
word choices are a huge factor, which can be determined whether it’s a personal or a
professional response. Some skills may be used digitally may not be used in-person, such as
technological ones. A huge part of the digital world relies on digital literacy through the use of
social media apps such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and the ability to navigate through
several other web pages and browsers. In-person communities rely heavily on interpersonal
skills which come within the person: the ability to conversate with one another face-to-face,
empathize, have situational awareness, and know physical and emotional boundaries.
4. Explain why being inclusive of different cultures and backgrounds contributes to a
respectful digital community.
Different cultures and backgrounds require different etiquette because no one size fits all.
One thing that may be appropriate in one community may not be acceptable in another. The
knowledge gained from cultural inclusivity allows us to make proper etiquette before
interacting with a certain community. It is important to know the culture’s values and way of
communication.
5. Reflect on the skills you bring to a digital community. Include the following:

C. What makes you feel supported in a digital community?
My strengths would include professionalism, confidence, consistency, and knowledge about
what I’m passionate about. Though my biggest struggle is developing meaningful connections
because I’m not usually the type to reveal too much personal information online. I would also
like to work on showing my personality more through the form of videos. For me to feel
supported in a digital community, I would expect people to agree with my opinions and
resonate with me on a personal story or struggle I tell based off my own artistry. As a
musician, this is extremely important for me.
