COMP4150

Advanced & Practical Database Systems

Fall 2025
SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

TEAM PROJECT GUIDELINE

This team project is a core practical component of the course. Students will work in teams
of 3–4 to design and implement a full database application, including requirement
specification, design, implementation, and a GUI.

The project mimics real-world database development and will be evaluated at each stage.

Team Formation
• Teams of 3–4 students.
• Aim for diverse skills (coding, design, documentation).
• Each team must select or be assigned a project idea.

Project Workflow & Deliverables

Step 1 – Project Proposal (September 15)

Deliverable: One to two pages proposal including:

• Project Title + Team Members
• Problem Domain & Motivation
• Target Users
• Brief System Description

Evaluation: Clarity of Idea, Feasibility, Team Role Distribution

Step 2 – Requirement Specification (September 24)

Deliverable: Requirement Analysis Document including:

• Functional Requirements (use cases)
• Non-functional Requirements (Performance, Security, Usability)
• Example Usage Scenarios

Evaluation: Completeness, Mapping to Real-world Needs

Step 3 – Conceptual & Logical Design (October 22)

Deliverable: Database Design Document including:

• ER/EER Diagrams
• Relational Schema (with Primary/Foreign Keys)
• Normalization Steps (up to 3NF/BCNF)

Evaluation: Correctness of Design, Consistency with Requirements

Step 4 – Implementation (October 29)

Deliverable: Working Database + Backend Code including:

• Create Schema in MySQL/ PostgreSQL/NoSQL
• Populate with Sample/Test Data
• Implement Key Queries, Stored Procedures, Triggers

Evaluation: Efficiency, Correctness, Meaningful Queries

Step 5 – GUI Development (November 12)

Deliverable: Functional User Interface (desktop or web) including:

• Create, Read, Update, and Delete (CRUD) Operations
• Support for at least 2–3 User Roles (e.g., Admin, Normal User)
• Tools: Python, Java, C#/.NET, or similar

Evaluation: Usability, Completeness, Integration with Database

Step 6 – Final Report & Presentation (November 17 & 24)

Deliverable:
• Report (10–15 pages): Requirements, Design, Implementation, Screenshots
• Demo Presentation (12 minutes per team)

Evaluation: Report quality, presentation clarity, working demo
