Problem Set 2 Due date: 29/10/1404
1. Determine the propagation velocity of longitudinal wave in a constrained and
unconstrained circular column of: (a) steel, (b) concrete with f`c=35MPa, (c) soil
with Gmax=80MPa (assume ρ=1.8ton/m3 and u=0.30 for soil).
2. Determine the propagation velocity of torsional shear wave in a circular column of:
(a) steel, (b) concrete with f`c=35MPa, (c) soil with Gmax=80MPa (assume
ρ=1.8ton/m3 and u=0.30 for soil).
3. A constrained long concrete rod (f`c=30MPa) is subjected to a harmonic axial stress
at a frequency of 2 Hz.
(a) Determine the wavelength of the axial displacements along the rod.
(b) Determine the phase angle between displacements measured at points on the rod
located 0.5 m, 5 m, 50 m, 500 m and 5000 m far apart.
(c) Repeat part (a) for loading frequencies of 10 Hz, 100 Hz and 1 kHz.
4. A long concrete rod (f`c=30MPa) is subjected to a harmonic shear stress at a
frequency of 2 Hz.
(a) Determine the wavelength of the shear deformations along the rod.
(b) Determine the phase angle between deformations measured at points on the rod
located 0.5 m, 5 m, 50 m, 500 m and 5000 m far apart.
(c) Repeat part (a) for loading frequencies of 10 Hz, 100 Hz and 1 kHz.
5. The infinite column shown below is half rock and half firm soil. If a stress pulse of
amplitude 100 kPa (compression positive) and frequency of 2 Hz travels through the
rock in the +x direction, determine the displacement amplitude of the transmitted
wave that travel through the firm soil. In your calculation assume that
ρrock=2.1ton/m3; ρsoil=1.7ton/m3; urock=0.20; usoil=0.30; Gmax-rock=1GPa and
Gmax-soil=300 MPa.
6. The finite soil column shown below is subjected to an impact load that produces a
rectangular shear stress pulse of amplitude 150 kPa and duration of 0.05 sec at its
left end. The left end of the column is free and the right end is fixed. Assuming that the
impact began at t=0, determine and plot the shear stress at the mid-point of soil layer
2 from t=0 to t=0.20 sec. In your calculation assume that ρsoil1=ρsoil2=1.8ton/m3;
usoil1=usoil2=0.30 and Gmax-soil1=200MPa; Gmax-soil2=350 MPa.

7. A dynamic test has been conducted on a circular end-bearing concrete pile by
vertically hitting its top applying a half-sine impulsive force (P) as shown below to
generate a P-wave along the pile. The reflected P-wave has been recorded by a geophone
mounted at the top of the pile in terms of velocity time history. The concrete can be
modeled by a visco-elastic Kelvin material with below specifications. Ignore the pile skin
friction due to the surrounding soil and answer the following questions:
A) Determine the amplitude of the maximum vertical velocity (PGV) recorded by the
geophone mounted at top of the pile considering the concrete material damping.
B) Draw the velocity time history recorded by the geophone form t=0 to t=0.1 sec
considering the concrete material damping.
Mechanical specifications of the concrete material:
ρconc=2.5ton/m3; nconc=0.3; Econc=2×104MPa; xconc=1×[Link]
ρsoil=1.8ton/m3
Esoil=3.0×103MPa
