Definition of Strategic Management
Content:
From Gamble (2019): Strategic management is the process of crafting and executing a company’s
strategy.
Two key parts: Crafting (deciding what to do) and Executing (doing it well).
Why Companies Need Strategy
Content:
Strategy provides:
o Direction for decisions
o Guidance for resource allocation
o Competitive positioning
Without it, companies drift aimlessly.
Elements of a Good Strategy
Content:
Fit with company’s situation.
Sustainable competitive advantage.
Coherent set of actions.
Levels of Strategy
Content:
Corporate level: Overall scope (e.g., what industries to be in).
Business level: How to compete in a specific industry.
Functional level: Strategies for specific departments.
