IBM License Metric Tool

Version 9.2
IBM®
Quick Start Guide
This guide introduces you to IBM License Metric Tool and gives you a roadmap to important
information.

Product overview
IBM License Metric Tool is an IBM product that is available to IBM Passport Advantage® customers free of charge. It
gathers information about installed software and hardware in a customer's infrastructure and measures the Processor
Value Units (PVUs), Virtual Processor Cores (VPCs) and Resource Value Units Managed Activated Processor Cores (RVUs
MAPC) that are available to IBM products which are not running on Kubernetes/OpenShift. Reports available in License
Metric Tool help IBM customers ensure compliance with IBM subcapacity licensing requirements and demonstrate good
IT governance.

1 Step 1: Install and configure

The License Metric Tool infrastructure can be based on the BigFix platform or disconnected scanners.
BigFix
BigFix is an agent-based endpoint management platform that forms the basis for License Metric Tool. It
provides a mechanism for running tasks that are used to perform actions on selected computers.
Deployment of License Metric Tool based on BigFix is advised in large-scale environments, environments in
which the majority of computers run on Windows, or environments in which BigFix is already used for other
purposes.
Disconnected scanners
Disconnected scans allow for discovering software and hardware inventory by using the same scanner
technology as in case of BigFix. However, the scanner is run by using scripts that are provided in the
disconnected scanner package. The scripts setup periodic software and capacity scans by using the system
scheduler and create a package with scan results that later on needs to be uploaded to the License Metric Tool
server.
Important: To report subcapacity licensing based on disconnected scanners on systems that are supported by
the BigFix platform, you need to get IBM approval. To obtain the approval, write to talk2sam@[Link] or
contact your IBM representative.

• License Metric Tool Lite

If your environment consists of up to 100 computers, you can use License Metric Tool Lite. It is a
deployment option in which you manage disconnected scans by an automation technology of your choice.
• License Metric Tool with Ansible
For larger environments, use Ansible to manage disconnected scans. Ansible is an open source product that
is used for automating applications and IT tasks. To manage scans by using Ansible, you run playbooks that
are delivered with License Metric Tool to install the disconnected scanner, manage software and capacity
scans, and upload their results to the License Metric Tool server.
For deployment instructions, see: Deploying.
2 Step 2: Set up data collection
After you install License Metric Tool, ensure that you properly set up collection of software and capacity data from
all required systems.
BigFix
If you completed the All-in-One installation on Linux or enabled the default scan schedule, basic software and
capacity data is collected automatically. In other cases, you need to manually set up scans on the managed
computers. Apart from that, you need to set up collection of data from virtual machines and public clouds. For
more information, see: Setting up data collection (BigFix scenario).
Disconnected scanners
When you use disconnected scanner, collection of data from the endpoints is scheduled and runs automatically.
You need to ensure that the collected data is uploaded to the License Metric Tool server. You can do this by
using Ansible playbooks or, if you use License Metric Tool Lite, by using an automation technology of your
choice. For more information, see: Setting up data collection (disconnected scenario).

Common questions

Powered by AI

IBM’s License Metric Tool contributes to good IT governance by providing detailed reports on PVUs, VPCs, and RVUs MAPC metrics, which are essential for managing software licensing and ensuring compliance with IBM's licensing requirements. This transparency in usage data allows organizations to align IT operations with business goals, optimize resource management, and avoid legal and financial penalties associated with non-compliance .

To set up data collection for the IBM License Metric Tool in a virtual machine and public cloud environment, the user must first ensure proper installation of the tool. For environments using BigFix, scans may be automated through the All-in-One installation or default scan schedule. In other cases, manual setup of scans on managed computers is required. Users must ensure data collection from all relevant virtual and cloud resources, and manage data uploads to the License Metric Tool server, either through BigFix or disconnected scanner methods .

Organizations can access a variety of resources to learn about and troubleshoot the IBM License Metric Tool, including the official License Metric Tool documentation, discussion forum, a YouTube channel, and PDF guides available on the IBM website. These resources provide comprehensive information and guidance for effective deployment and management of the tool .

For large-scale environments, particularly where the majority of computers run on Windows or BigFix is already in use for other purposes, deploying the IBM License Metric Tool based on the BigFix platform is recommended. It provides a mechanism for running tasks on selected computers, ensuring efficient management and compliance. In cases where BigFix is not suitable, disconnected scanners can be used, but IBM approval is needed for reporting subcapacity licensing. For environments with up to 100 computers, License Metric Tool Lite is recommended, while larger environments can utilize Ansible for managing scans and uploads effectively .

The IBM License Metric Tool ensures compliance with subcapacity licensing requirements by collecting, measuring, and reporting PVUs, VPCs, and RVUs MAPC metrics. It provides detailed reports to help IBM customers demonstrate compliance and good IT governance. This capability helps businesses manage their software licenses effectively, avoid penalties, and ensure alignment with IBM's licensing terms, thus supporting overall IT governance and strategic IT management .

The decision to use BigFix versus disconnected scanners for deploying the IBM License Metric Tool depends on several factors, including the scale of the environment, the existing IT infrastructure, and compliance needs. BigFix is preferred for large-scale environments or where it is already part of the infrastructure due to its agent-based management capabilities. Disconnected scanners might be chosen in environments where BigFix is not feasible, but these require manual uploads and IBM approval for certain licensing reports, potentially complicating compliance processes. The choice directly affects ease of deployment, cost, and strategic alignment with IT governance policies .

Disconnected scanners differ from the BigFix platform in that they use scripts to run periodic software and capacity scans, rather than being agent-based. The scan data must then be manually uploaded to the License Metric Tool server. BigFix, on the other hand, is an agent-based platform that enables automated data collection and management through task scheduling. Additionally, using disconnected scanners requires IBM approval for subcapacity licensing reports on systems supported by BigFix .

An organization may choose to use License Metric Tool Lite if their environment consists of up to 100 computers, as it offers a simplified and cost-effective solution for smaller environments. However, unlike the full version, it requires the user to manage disconnected scans using automation technology of their choice, which may limit ease of use and integration compared to environments where BigFix or Ansible is applicable .

Ansible is used in larger environments to manage the IBM License Metric Tool by automating the installation of disconnected scanners, managing software and capacity scans, and facilitating the upload of scan results to the License Metric Tool server. Ansible simplifies the process by using playbooks that coordinate these tasks, ensuring efficient and effective management of the tool across numerous endpoints without the need for extensive manual intervention .

Approval from IBM is necessary when using disconnected scanners for reporting subcapacity licensing on systems that are supported by the BigFix platform. The approval process involves contacting IBM by writing to talk2sam@us.ibm.com or reaching out to an IBM representative. This requirement ensures that licensing reports accurately reflect IBM's licensing conditions and mitigates potential compliance risks .
