H. Rumlah Amer
Homework-I Fall
Semester, 2025

• The deadline to submit homework is October 03, 2025.

• To facilitate grading and timely feedback, all submissions are through Gradescope. The
course entry code is provided on LMS.

• Solve each problem on a new page.

• Correctly link solutions on Gradescope.

Q1. Slope & Equations

Engineers plan a new road connecting two towns. The road must pass through (12,30)
and be perpendicular to the highway through (5,10) and (15,20).

a. Write the equation of the new road and draw.

b. Find the intersection point of both roads (to determine where an interchange should
be built) and draw.
c. If construction cost is proportional to road length, estimate the cost of building a 15-
mile stretch starting from the intersection if cost is $2.5 million per mile.

Q2. Supply / Demand

A sports stadium charges $50 per ticket and sells 10,000 tickets at that price. For every
$5 increase in ticket price, 400 fewer tickets are sold. The team has fixed costs of
$100,000 and variable costs of $10 per ticket sold.

a. determine the ticket price that maximizes profit.

b. if the city imposes a price cap of $70 per ticket, calculate the loss in profit compared
to the optimal price
c. sketch the demand, revenue, and profit functions on the same set of axes.

Q3. Minimum / Maximum

The arch of a suspension bridge is modeled by

𝑦(𝑥) = −0.01𝑥 2 + 4𝑥,

where 𝒚 is height (in meters) and 𝒙 is horizontal distance (in meters). The span is 300 m.

a. Find the maximum height of the arch and the location where it occurs.
b. Find the height of the arch at both ends of the span (0,300).
c. Use the symmetry of the parabola to find the height at a point 50 m from the right end
(x = 250) and explain how symmetry helps avoid recomputation.

Note: Span is the horizontal length of the bridge between two ends.

Q4. Domain / Range

a. Find the Domain and Range of the following:

5
i. 𝑓(𝑥) = −√𝑥 2 +36

ii. 𝑓(𝑥) = √15𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 2

b. Find the Domain and Range. Then, use each graph to find:
1
(𝑎)𝑓(−2), (𝑏) 𝑓(0), (𝑐) 𝑓( ), 𝑎𝑛𝑑 (𝑑) 𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑥 𝑠𝑢𝑐ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑓(𝑥) = 1
2

i) ii)

Q5. Polynomials

Each of the following is the graph of a polynomial function. Give the possible values for
the degree of the polynomial, and give the sign or for the leading coefficient

i) iii)

ii) iv)
