Title of the Activity Familiarization and identification of valves and fittings in MARLAB
Safety Briefing ● Wear PPE: Always wear safety goggles, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
● Handle Carefully: Use proper lifting techniques and avoid forcing valves or fittings.
● Keep Workspace Safe: Maintain a clean area; use tools correctly.
● Check for Pressure: Ensure all systems are isolated and depressurized before
handling.
● Report Hazards: Inform the instructor of any damaged equipment or unsafe conditions.
● Follow Instructions: Only operate or disassemble components under supervision.
● Emergency Awareness: Know the locations of exits, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.
Scenario You are part of a ship's engineering team tasked with inspecting and identifying valves and
fittings in the engine room before departure. Your goal is to verify that all components, such as
globe valves, gate valves, and pipe fittings, are correctly labeled, functional, and properly
installed. Any discrepancies or damages must be reported to ensure the system's reliability and
safety during the voyage.
Initial Condition of the All valves and fittings are arranged in the MARLAB workspace, properly cleaned, and free of
Activity pressure or fluid. Tools, reference charts, and PPE are readily available, and the workspace is
organized to ensure safe and efficient inspection. Participants are briefed on safety protocols
and provided with an overview of the activity objectives.
Allocation of
60 minutes (15 minutes briefing, 30 minutes activity and 15 minutes debriefing)
Time/Duration
Resources Required Valves and Fittings:
● Globe valves, gate valves, ball valves, butterfly valves, check valves, and relief valves.
● Pipe fittings such as elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, and couplings.
Tools and Equipment:
● Wrenches, screwdrivers, and other basic hand tools.
● Labeling materials (tags, markers, or stickers).
Reference Materials:
● Diagrams or charts of valves and fittings.
● Operating manuals or guides.
Safety Gear:
● Safety goggles, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
● First aid kit for emergencies.
Workspace Setup:
● Organized and clean workspace in MARLAB.
● Tables or stands for displaying valves and fittings.
Briefing on the Activity 1. Conduct of safety briefing to highlight the safety behavior expected from the students
2. Explanation of the activity proper
3. Ask students if he has any questions or need clarification.
Procedure of the Safety Briefing: Review PPE requirements and safety protocols.

Activity
Introduction: Briefly explain the types and functions of valves and fittings.
Inspection: Identify and label the valves and fittings at assigned workstations.
Operation Practice: Practice opening, closing, and handling selected valves under supervision.
Discussion: Share observations and clarify any questions.
Assessment: Test knowledge with a quick identification quiz or practical evaluation.
Wrap-Up: Summarize key learnings and clean up the workspace.
Condition/s for 1. Power interruption
