CLASS NO:173
SECTION: P
Problem Statement
A steel school building (assembly structure) will be constructed on University Road,
Peshawar. The structure is a Special Steel Moment Resisting Frame (SMRF) with 5 floors
(10 ft each) and a steel truss roof (height 5 ft, span 30 ft). Building size = 90 ft × 150 ft. Steel
used = A36. Site soil = Class C (SPT). Partially enclosed; exposure to wind reduced below
60%.
Solutions:
Part 1
Reference: ASCE/SEI 7-16 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and
Other Structures.

2. Loads and Load Combinations
3. Dead Loads
4. Live Loads
5. Snow Loads
6. Rain Loads
7. Ice Loads
8. Wind Loads
9. Earthquake Loads
10. Flood Loads
11. Load Combinations

Part 3
Types of Loads and Load Combinations:
Loads: Dead Load (DL), Live Load (LL), Roof Load (RL), Wind Load (WL), Seismic Load (EL).
Load Combinations (ASCE 7-16):
1. 1.4D
2. 1.2D + 1.6L + 0.5(Lr or R or S)
3. 1.2D + 1.0W + 1.0L + 0.5(Lr or R)
4. 1.2D + 1.0E + 1.0L + 0.2S
5. 0.9D + 1.0W
6. 0.9D + 1.0E
Part 4
Steel Used: ASTM A36
Fy = 36 ksi
Fu = 58 ksi
Possible loads on structure: Dead load = self-weight of frame + slab (~150 psf), Live load =
40 psf, Roof live load = 20 psf, Wind and seismic loads as per ASCE 7-16.
Part 5
Wind Design Parameters (ASCE 7-16):
Basic wind speed, V = 110 mph
Exposure Category = C
2
Building importance category = II
Directionality factor, Kd = 0.85
Topographic factor, Kzt = 1.0
Velocity pressure coefficient, Kz (at 50 ft) = 0.85
Velocity pressure (qz): qz = 0.00256 Kz Kzt Kd V^2 = 0.00256(0.85) (1) (0.85) (110) ^2 =
22.0 psf
Part 6
Structure Type:
Rigid frame system (Special Moment Resisting Frame).
Part 7
Design Wind Pressure:
For partially enclosed building:
Internal pressure coefficient, GCpi = ±0.55
External pressure coefficient, GCp = -0.8 (windward = +0.8, leeward = -0.5)
p = qz(GCp - GCpi)
pwindward = 22(0.8 - (-0.55)) = 29.7 psf
pleeward = 22(-0.5 - (-0.55)) = 1.1 psf
Part 8
Base Shear (Equivalent Lateral Force Method – ELF):
Ss = 0.60g, S1 = 0.20g
Site Class C → Fa = 1.2, Fv = 1.7
SDS = 2/3(SsFa) = 0.48
SD1 = 2/3(S1Fv) = 0.23
Ta = Ct h^x = 0.028(50)^0.8 = 0.73s
R = 6.5, I = 1.0
Cs = SDS/(R/I) = 0.48/6.5 = 0.074
V = CsW = 0.074 × (150×90×150 psf) = 1.5×10^5 lbs = 150 kips
