TOPIC: SIMULTANEOUS

EQUATIONS
N Algebraic notation; Is a system for representing mathematical
expressions and relationship using letters(variables),numbers
(constants),and symbols for operation LIKE
ADDITION,SUBSTRACTION, and MULTIPLICATION.
Variables: Symbols,typically letters like X and Y. (X and Y are
called Unknown values).
CONTENT

and Substitution method.

 Word problems
METHODS USED FOR SOLVING SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS
I. Elimination method
II. Substitution method
III. Graphical method
ELIMINATION METHOD:
This is a technique used to find the values of variables by
strategically adding or substracting the equations to
cancel out one variable ,leaving a single equation with one
unknown.
Questions:
Solve the following equations by Elimination method(Class
assignment).
a. X + Y = 10 and X - Y = 2
b. 3X – 5 = 7 and X + 5Y = 15
c. 2X + 5Y =1 and 3X – 2Y = 30
d. 5X- 4Y= 38 and X + 3Y = 22
SUBSTITUTION METHOD:

This is an algebraic technique to solve systems of two or

more equations by solving one equation for one variable
and substitution that expression into the other equation.
Questions:
Solve the following equations by Substitution
method( Class assignment).
a. X + Y = 10 and X – Y = 2
b. X + 2Y=10 and 4X +3Y=20
c. 4X - Y =8 and 5X + Y=19
d. X/2 – Y = 1/3 and X/4 + Y/3 = 1/16
GRAPHICAL METHOD:
This is a technique for solving equations and problems by
visualizing them on a coordinate Plane.
NB;In order to use the graphical method in solving
simultaneous equations, you have to understand Y and X
intercept.(Y intercept means X = 0 and X intercept means
Y = 0).
Questions:
Solve the following equations of simultaneous by
Graphical.
a. X + Y = 10 and X – Y= 2
b. 3X – 2Y = 6 and X + Y = -8
c. Y=X – 1 and Y = -2X – 7
