Analytical Chemistry Homework 2024-2025

The document outlines Homework #2 for an Analytical Chemistry course, due on 25/10/2024, consisting of three main problems. The first problem involves determining the number of fluoxetine samples needed to maintain a relative standard deviation of 5% at a 95% confidence level. The second and third problems focus on buffer solutions and titration calculations involving CH3NH2 and HCl, including pH calculations and indicator selection.

Analytical Chemistry

Semester 1, 2024-2025

HOMEWORK # 2

Due date: 25/10/2024

1. (30 marks) In the production of Prozac, a commercial drug containing fluoxetine as its
active ingredient, a method for the determination of fluoxetine in solution obtained
from a pharmaceutical preparation was used and yielded a mean value of 48.5 mg/mL
with a sampling standard deviation of 3.3 mg/mL. How many samples of fluoxetine
should be analyzed in each batch to make sure that the relative standard deviation does
not exceed 5% at the 95% confidence level?

2. (30 marks) A buffer solution is prepared by mixing 0.1 mole of CH3NH2 (Kb = 4.38 x
10-4) with 0.08 mole of HCl and diluted to one liter.
a. (5 marks) What is the conjugate acid form of CH3NH2?
b. (5 marks) What is the pKa value of the conjugate acid form at 25 C?
c. (10 marks) What is the pH of the buffer?
d. (10 marks) What is the change in pH if 100 ml of 0.05 M HCl is added to the
buffer solution?

3. (40 marks) 50.0 mL CH3NH2 (Kb = 4.38 x 10-4) 0.100 M is titrated with HCl 0.100 M.
a. (25 marks) Calculate the pH of the solution at 0, 10.0, 25.0, 50.0, and 60.0 mL of
the titrant.
b. (5 marks) Sketch the titration.
c. (10 marks) Propose the appropriate indicator for this titration (consult Table 10.3
in slide 33 of lecture 4). Reason your choice.
