HAND MOTION REPLICATION: A WEARABLE

GLOVE OPERATED ROBOTIC HAND

Objectives
1. To design and develop a robotic hand capable of replicating human hand movements in real
time.
2. To implement a wearable sensor glove that captures finger and hand motions.
3. To integrate Arduino-based control systems for signal processing and actuation.
4. To demonstrate accurate and responsive hand motion replication for potential applications in
robotics, prosthetics, and remote manipulation.

Background
The replication of human hand movements through robotics has gained significant importance in
fields such as prosthetics, teleoperation, and human–machine interaction. A robotic hand controlled
by wearable sensors offers a cost-effective and practical solution for mimicking natural hand
motions. By using flex sensors or motion detectors embedded in a glove, finger positions can be
translated into control signals for actuators in a robotic hand. Arduino microcontrollers provide an
accessible yet powerful platform for signal processing and control implementation, making the
system both feasible and scalable for academic and industrial applications.

Methodology
1. System Design
- Develop a robotic hand model using lightweight materials (e.g., 3D printing).
- Embed servo motors or actuators in the robotic hand for finger movements.

2. Sensor Glove Development

- Attach flex sensors or bend sensors to each finger of a wearable glove.
- Connect sensors to an Arduino board for motion data acquisition.

3. Control System Implementation

- Program the Arduino to read sensor values and map them to finger movements.
- Develop a real-time signal processing algorithm to control servos based on glove inputs.

4. Integration and Testing

- Connect the glove to the robotic hand via wired or wireless communication.
- Test system performance, accuracy, and response time in replicating hand gestures.

Suspected Outcomes
- A functional prototype of a robotic hand capable of replicating human hand gestures with
reasonable accuracy and minimal delay.
- Demonstration of effective real-time control through a wearable glove interface.
- Validation of the system’s potential applications in assistive technology (prosthetics), robotics,
teleoperation, and human–machine interaction.
- A scalable control system model that can be improved with advanced sensors and machine
learning integration in future work.
