CORRUPTION
There are good and bad things in every society, but some things are so bad that
they destroy the existence of peace in society. People's tolerance ends and
oppression reaches its peak. These moral diseases or evils eat people like worms
and corruption is one of them. Corruption is the abuse of entrusted power for
private gain. It occurs when individuals in positions of authority exploit their
role for personal benefit, violating legal or ethical standards. Corruption is a
nasty disease that eradicates justice and fairness from society and deprives the
rightful holders of their rights. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said: "Both the one who
gives bribes and the one who takes bribes are in Hell."Corruption can be found in
both public and private sectors and can take many forms, including bribery,
embezzlement, nepotism, fraud, and abuse of power. Here we will discuss some main
causes of corruption
CAUSES
Lack of Transparency and Accountability :
When decision making processes are not open or monitored, officials can abuse their
power without fear of being caught. No one is there to monitor what's going inside
the offices. They do what they want or give favours to whom they want. The entire
department's name gets dirty because of one employee. Government tenders or
contracts awarded without public scrutiny can lead to favouritism or bribery. This
is how actually favouritism works.
Weak Legal Framework and Ineffective Law Enforcement :
Even if anti corruption laws exist, poor enforcement, delays in the judicial
system, and political interference also effects it badly & often prevent those laws
from being applied effectively. Anti corruption agencies lack independence or
authority. Courts are overburdened, underfunded, or influenced. Loopholes in laws
allow powerful individuals to escape punishment. High profile scams like the 2G
Spectrum case (India) or the Petrobras scandal (Brazil) took years to be
prosecuted, with many accused never facing significant punishment. It promotes a
culture of impunity, Reduces the deterrent effect of legal consequences and the
Encourages systemic corruption.
Low Salaries and Poor Working Conditions :
When government employees are not paid adequately, especially at lower levels, they
may seek alternative sources of income through bribes or misuse of authority.
Economic problems pushes officials to demand illegal money. Underpaid police,
clerks, and municipal workers become habitual of petty corruption. Lack of
performance based incentives. It all results in loose of public trust or resentment
, weakens the service delivery to poor and corruption increases day by day.
SUMMARY
Corruption is a major obstacle to development, good governance, and public trust.
It refers to the abuse of power for personal gain and can exist at all levels.
Corruption is not just an individual moral failure but a whole society or system
issue that requires a comprehensive approach strengthening institutions, enforcing
laws, promoting transparency, and fostering a culture of integrity through
education and civic engagement.
