respect to elders, and decorating our homes and monasteries with lights.
Thailand celebrates Yi Peng together with Loy Krathong, where people release candle
baskets onto water.
Myanmar has different traditions, but both cultures share the same meaning: light, gratitude,
respect, and prayer.
So even though the traditions are different, the heart of these festivals is similar in both

Yi Peng is a traditional Lanna celebration held in Chiang Mai.
It takes place on the full moon of the second Lanna month, usually in November.
People release sky lanterns to symbolize letting go of bad luck and welcoming new blessings.
At the same time, Loy Krathong is celebrated, where small candle baskets are floated on
rivers.
Because of these combined traditions, Chiang Mai becomes filled with lights both in the sky
and on the water.”**
