For the summary:
Its usually the same question which is "What are the challenges or difficulties _____ faced"and it will
usually say "Up to 10 marks are available for the CONTENT of your answer and up to 5 marks for the
quality of your writing"
- make sure to use your own words as much as possible, answer the questions in your own way.- do
not write more then 120, but try to get more then 100 words in to be sure.- keep it simple, but
detailed- try to get more then 10 points in, the more points the better.- try to use connectives (5
marks are based on the quality of your writing)- underline or highlight your points from the insert.

Summary: STEP 1: Understand what you have read- Start off each paragraph with _"The overall effect
of the language..."_
STEP 2: Transitional phrase.- Use _"The writer begins by..."
STEP 3: Use quotation which you have underlined/highlighted/identified (sort of imagery or powerful
word or phrase you can comment on because of its effect on us as a reader.)- Short quotations. Two
to three words *MAX*.
STEP 4: Zoom-in technique- Describe the writer's use of imagery or powerful word or personification,
etc. 's effect
STEP 5: Analyze your chosen word/phrase (Most important)- Show you understand what the writer is
trying to achieve.- Analytical words or phrases: "This shows..."; "This highlights..."; "This
emphasizes..."; "This reinforces..."; "This creates a sense of..."; "This creates an image of..."- Use a
range of those phrases ^^^ throughout paragraphs*The use of all steps into one example:*"The
writer's use of the powerful verb 'stormed' creates a palpable sense of the character's frustration. It
is clear that the character is feeling..." and then develop your analysis.
STEP 6: Repeat steps 2-6 on your next quotation.
(this question usually says write ABOUT 200-300 words, doesn't mean you should write exactly 200
or 300 words, just make sure its around that area, not too less then 200, and not too much more
then 300, don't worry a lot about the word limit, they use the word 'about' because allegedly
students didn't know how much to write, so the examiners wrote the word limit to give them an
idea, however if it says "do not write more then ___" then do not go over that limit.)

Tips in general
- manage your timing! try to use this technique
spend about 20 minutes on the summaryspend about 30 minutes on the writers effectspend around
40 or more on the extended writinguse the rest of the time to maximize your scores on the smaller
questions~ if you want, start by answering the longer questions, then towards the end go to the
short ones.
usually there is a question that says:
Using your own words, explain what the text means by
(i) 'provide evidence' {2}
_______________________________________________________________________________
(notice how it is a TWO mark question, so you have to give a definition of the word 'provide', AND
the word 'evidence', please do not lose a mark for this, give a description of BOTH words.
-always check how many marks the question is, and try to write that many points,ex: What changes
are needed to improve the recycling of plastic

are 3, which means you need to find and write 3 points!
- Vocabulary is important, I know a person who wrote an entire descriptive story in the summary
question, but still got good marks because the vocabulary they used was so amazing.
- Don't neglect the small questions, they can get you to an A, try to score full marks on them
- I heard somewhere that you can lose a mark if you don't put a title on some extended writing so be
aware of that.
- Make sure to get good sleep or at least inhale some coffee before the exam because its basically 2
hours of hell.
