TEST OF DIFFERENT TOOTHPASTE SAMPLES FOR CATION AND ANION ANALYSIS
1. Title
Qualitative Analysis of Cations and Anions Present in Five Toothpaste Samples: Colgate,
Close-Up, Sensodyne, Pepsodent, and Dant Kanti.
2. Aim
To analyze and compare the presence of common cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+) and anions (Cl−,
CO3^2−, HCO3−, F−, SO4^2−, PO4^3−) in five different commercial toothpaste samples.
3. Introduction
Toothpaste is a mixture of abrasives, humectants, detergents, binders, flavours, and therapeutic
agents such as fluoride. These components contain ions that can be identified using qualitative
tests.
4. Requirements
Test tubes, droppers, HCl, H2SO4, lime water, AgNO3, BaCl2, ammonium molybdate, flame test
setup, distilled water, filter paper.
5. Preparation of Toothpaste Extract
Mix 1 g toothpaste with 10 mL distilled water, stir, filter, and collect filtrate.
6. Tests Performed
A. Anion Tests: Carbonate, Chloride, Sulphate, Phosphate, Fluoride
B. Cation Tests: Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium
7. Observations
(Table summarized in project.)
8. Results
Each toothpaste shows presence of different ions as detailed earlier.
9. Discussion
Ion variation reflects formulation differences such as abrasive type, fluoride content, and
desensitizing agents.
10. Conclusion
Dant Kanti & Sensodyne show widest ion variety. All samples contain sodium and fluoride.
11. Precautions
Use clean apparatus, handle chemicals carefully, perform flame tests under supervision.
12. Bibliography
NCERT Chemistry Class XII, Google Scholar articles, manufacturer ingredient lists.
