Entrepreneurship Within Four Walls:
The Creative Spark of Innovative Negosyo sa Bahay
ABSTRACT
Home-based businesses (HBBs) have become an important part of the
business world, allowing people to balance work and personal life. A review
by Malik and Alkhaldi (2024) shows the roles and challenges HBBs have faced
over the last twenty years. Research suggests that the business environment
and marketing strategies are key to the success of home-based businesses,
while technology doesn't seem to have as big of an impact (Al-Harthi, 2022).
Additionally, the reasons behind starting HBBs are often complex and linked
to both personal and work-related factors (Jayawarna et al., 2013). Although
HBBs offer benefits, owners face challenges like limited resources and
balancing work with personal life. Kapasi and Galloway (2018) discuss the
differences in home-based businesses and stress the importance of strategic
planning to tackle these challenges. In conclusion, the success of HBBs
depends on factors like the business environment and marketing. To ensure
long-term success, HBB owners must plan well and find ways to overcome
challenges like resource shortages and work-life balance.
RESEARCH RELATED LITERATURE
A study on home-based food businesses in Cebu examined how interior
space planning influences work-life balance among business owners. The
research, which used qualitative content analysis, included photo
documentation, semi-structured interviews, and surveys. Findings revealed
that kitchen space plays a critical role in workflow efficiency, with business
owners prioritizing space utilization to accommodate both household and
business needs. Interestingly, most businesses did not significantly alter their
kitchen layout after establishing their businesses. Time management
emerged as a key strategy for maintaining work-life balance. The study
recommended further research involving floor plan analysis and studies in
different locations to compare results.
Mason, Carter, and Tagg (n.d.) explored the characteristics of home-
based businesses (HBBs) in the United Kingdom, emphasizing their economic
significance despite often being overlooked. Their study found that HBBs
constitute a considerable portion of the small business sector, with many
operating as full-time businesses and even scaling to employ additional
workers. The study also highlighted that HBBs are primarily concentrated in
industries such as computer-related services, business, and professional
services. Geographically, rural areas and non-metropolitan regions in
Southern England have the highest proportion of home-based businesses,
while urban-industrial regions show the lowest concentration. These findings
suggest the need to reassess the role of HBBs in local economic
development.
Malik and Alkhaldi (2024) conducted a systematic review of research
on home-based businesses from 2000 to 2023. Their study analyzed 58
academic articles, categorizing them into five major themes related to the
economic role, entrepreneurial challenges, and success strategies of HBBs.
The review highlighted how societal and technological changes have
influenced home-based businesses over time. The findings provided valuable
insights into the evolving landscape of HBBs and underscored gaps in
research that future studies could address. The study concluded that HBBs
play a crucial role in modern economies, yet challenges such as financial
constraints, resource limitations, and work-life balance remain prevalent
obstacles for entrepreneurs.
RELATION TO PRESENT STUDY
The present study connects with several key findings from previous research
on home-based businesses (HBBs). Similar to the work of Malik and Alkhaldi (2024),
it emphasizes the importance of the business environment and marketing strategies
for the success of HBBs. The study also highlights that effective planning and
strategy are crucial for overcoming challenges such as balancing work and personal
life, and managing limited resources. This aligns with the findings of Kapasi and
Galloway (2018), who stress the need for strategic planning to address common
issues faced by HBB owners.
Furthermore, the study on home-based food businesses in Cebu, which
focuses on how space planning affects work-life balance, directly relates to the
present research. The Cebu study shows that the layout of the workspace,
particularly the kitchen, plays a significant role in managing both business and
household needs. This is a challenge that home-based entrepreneurs often face and
is recognized in the present study.
The research by Mason, Carter, and Tagg (n.d.) also complements the
present study’s findings by discussing the economic significance of HBBs,
particularly in rural areas. This highlights the importance of understanding the local
context in which HBBs operate, which is a theme explored in the present research.
In summary, the present study builds on existing research by reinforcing the
importance of business environment, marketing strategies, space planning, and
local context in the success of home-based businesses. It underlines the need for
good planning and strategic approaches to tackle challenges and ensure the long-
term success of HBBs.
