A skew-symmetric matrix is one that satisfies the condition A^T = -A. For odd-order skew-symmetric matrices, the determinant is always zero because the determinant of A equals the determinant of -A, and for such matrices, -A is transposable to A, thus forcing the determinant to be negative of itself, which implies it must be zero .
The inverse of matrix A can be found using its adjoint provided det(A) ≠ 0. The procedure is A^(-1) = adj(A)/det(A). This method applies strictly to square matrices with non-zero determinants. The adjoint is a transpose of the cofactor matrix of A, and if det(A) is zero, A doesn't have an inverse .
A matrix A is idempotent if A^2 = A. Properties of idempotent matrices include having eigenvalues that are either 0 or 1, and being square matrices. The rank of an idempotent matrix equals its trace, which is the sum of its eigenvalues .
For matrices where configurations exceed limits or determinants extend to extreme or infinite cases (like idempotent property), stability and convergence issues arise in calculations involving infinite series. Properties like eigenvalue distributions become integral in predicting behaviors, with series manipulations relying heavily on convergence criteria typical in spectral theory, allowing constrained interpretations .
A matrix A can be expressed as a sum of a unit matrix U (with eigenvalues as one) and a nilpotent matrix N (with eigenvalues as zero) by finding a decomposition where A = U + N such that U – I^k and N^m = 0 for some k and m. The relevance is in simplifying matrix exponentiation and understanding matrix iterative behaviors, such as A^n for large n .
For a triangular matrix A of order n, the maximum number of distinct entries is l = n(n+1)/2. If this is compared to diagonal matrices, say m distinct entries for a diagonal, and p as the minimum zeros in the triangular case such that l + 5 = p + 2m, solving these equations for n gives the order. Usually, n can be computed, assuming constraints like p = n(n-1)/2, m = n, and simplifying the combined expressions meet the required conditions .
Involutory matrices satisfy the condition A^2 = I, making them their own inverse. Idempotent matrices satisfy A^2 = A. Projection operators can be constructed from these matrices: P = (I + A)/2 and Q = (I - A)/2 for an involutory matrix A. Here, both P and Q are idempotent, with P + Q = I and PQ = 0, demonstrating complementary orthogonal projections .
The exponential matrix F(x) developed from orthogonal transformations such as rotations satisfies group properties (closure, identity, inverses). For instance, F(x)F(y) = F(x + y) shows closure under composition. Furthermore, F(x)^T = F(-x) is the orthogonal property indicating inverses, where [F(x)]^(-1) = F(-x), confirming identity as F(0) = I .
Any square matrix M can be expressed as the sum of a symmetric matrix and a skew-symmetric matrix by using the formula: M = (M + M^T)/2 + (M - M^T)/2, where M^T is the transpose of M. This works because (M + M^T)/2 is symmetric and (M - M^T)/2 is skew-symmetric .
For matrices S (symmetric) and K (skew-symmetric), the product SK + KS is skew-symmetric with a trace of zero. This happens because the trace of a product is invariant under cyclic permutations, and since SK and KS contribute oppositely in iterations, their combined trace remains zero .
