1.
Create an estimated S-N diagram for a ductile steel bar and define its
equations. How many cycles of life can be expected if the alternating
stress is 100 MPa? The Sut has been tested at 600 MPa. The bar is 150
mm square and has a hot-rolled finish. The operating temperature is
500°C maximum. The loading will be fully reversed bending. A
reliability factor of 99.9% will be used.
2. Create an estimated S-N diagram for an Aluminum bar and define its
equations. What is the corrected fatigue strength at 2E7 cycles? The
Sut for this 6061-T6 Aluminum has been tested at 45000 psi. The
forged bar is 1.5 in round. The maximum operating temperature is
300°F. The loading is fully reversed torsion. A reliability factor of 99.0%
will be used. The uncorrected fatigue strength will be taken at 5E8
cycles.
3. The 2-mm-thick bar shown in the following figure is loaded axially with
a constant force of 10 kN. The bar material has been heat treated and
quenched to raise its strength, but as a consequence, it has lost most
of its ductility. It is desired to drill a hole through the center of the 40-
mm face of the plate to allow a cable to pass through it. A 4-mm hole
is sufficient for the cable to fit, but an 8-mm drill is readily available.
Will a crack be more likely to initiate at the larger hole, the smaller
hole, or at the fillet?
4. A rectangular steel stepped bar shown in the following figure is to
be loaded in bending. Determine the fatigue stress-concentration
factor for the given dimensions. D = 2 in, d = 1.8 in, and r = 0.25
in. The material has Sut = 100 kpsi.
5. A machine component is subjected to fluctuating stress that varies
from 40 to 100 N/mm2. The corrected endurance limit stress for the
machine component is 270 N/mm2. The ultimate tensile strength and
yield strength of the material are 600 and 450 N/mm2 respectively.
Find the factor of safety using Gerber Line, Soderberg line & Goodman
line. Also, find the factor of safety against static failure.
6. A cantilever beam made of cold drawn steel 4OC8 (Sut = 600 N/mm2
and Syt = 380 N/mm2) is shown in the following figure. The force P
acting at the free end varies from -50 N to +150 N. The expected
reliability is 90% and the factor of safety considering fatigue is 2.0.
The notch sensitivity factor at the fillet is 0.9. Determine the diameter
‘d’ of the beam at the fillet cross-section using Modified Goodman
diagram as well as Gerber curve as failure criterion.
