1. A ski resort is planning to construct a new ski lift on one of
their mountains. As a means of finding the length of the
proposed lift, a surveyor measures the angle of inclination of the
mountain to be 25°. He then walks 1,000 feet away from the
base of the mountain and measures the angle of inclination there
to be 15°. If the lift is to be placed along the surface of the
mountain, how long would the lift cable have to be?
2. The famous Leaning Tower of Pisa was originally 184.5 feet high. At a distance
of 123 feet from all the way across at the base of the tower, the angle of elevation to
the top of the tower from that point is found to be 60°. What angle is the Leaning
Tower of Pisa leaning at? What is the current height (straight up from the ground)
of the tower?
3. The distance from home plate to the fence in dead center field at Wrigley
Field, home of the Chicago Cubs is 400 feet. How far is it from dead center field
to third base, if the baseball diamond is actually a square that has side lengths of
90 feet?
4. You are building a swing set in your backyard. Each end of the swing set is to
be supported with an A-frame constructed with two 10 foot long pieces of wood
that are joined at a 40° angle. To secure the base of each piece of wood in your
frame, you decide to nail them into concrete blocks. How far apart should the
concrete blocks be?
