CVL-500: Tutorial 2
Example 1:
A steel floor framing plan has simply supported beams at their ends. The specific loads are: Live
load = 5 kN/m2, and Dead load = 4 kN/m2. The dead load includes the self-weight of the steel
beams.
1- Determine the factored applied moment and shear to be used to design beam B1.
2- For steel beam of W610x174, the moment of inertia, Ix = 1186.5 x 106 mm4 and the steel
modulus of elasticity = 200,000 MPa. Calculate the deflection due to live load for beam
B1.
3- Determine the factored applied moment and shear to be used to design beam B2.
4- For steel beam of W610x101, the moment of inertia, Ix = 764x 106 mm4 and the steel
modulus of elasticity = 200,000 MPa. Calculate the deflection due to live load for beam
B2.
Example 2:
A steel beam and column framing layout of a platform in an industrial building is shown below.
The sizes of beams B1, B2 and B3 are as follows:
Beam B1: W310x21 (Ix = 37 x 106 mm4)
Beam B2: W410x60 (Ix = 216 x 106 mm4)
Beam B3: W410x74 (Ix = 275 x 106 mm4)
The average dead load, including self-weight of the beams = is 2 kN/m2, and the live load = 3.6
kN/m2.
The symbol in the steel framing plan refers to the direction of the transfer of the floor
loads to the supporting beams, which is the orientation of the ribs in the steel deck over the
beams.
1- Determine the factored applied moment and shear to be used to design beam B1. Also,
calculate its live load deflection.
2- Determine the factored applied moment and shear to be used to design beam B2. Also,
calculate its live load deflection.
3- Determine the factored applied moment and shear to be used to design beam B3. Also,
calculate its live load deflection.
Example 3:
The shown panel in a rigid frame structure is made of a W530x66 beam that is rigidly connected
and supported by steel W610x125columns. A concentrated load is applied at the beam midspan
as shown (Dead load = 125 kN, Live load = 125 kN). Consider the self-weight of the steel beam.
1- Determine the applied factored positive and negative moments and the factored shear
force to design this beam at ULS.
2- Calculate the live load deflection.
Example 4:
The shown reinforced concrete beam is subjected to the dead and live loads over the floor in
kN/m2. The beam spacing in the floor system is 2 m as shown. The applied dead load includes
the self-weight of the beams.
Example 5:
For the shown continuous beam with two internal hinges,
a) Calculate the factored applied positive moment in span EF.
b) Calculate the factored applied positive moment in span AB.
c) Calculate the factored applied negative moment at support B.
d) Calculate the factored shear force at support A, and left and right of support B, and at
support E.
Dead load including beam self-weight, D = 15 kN/m
Live load = 30 kN/m
At the location of internal hinges, split the structure into a second beam that is supported over two main
beams, each of which is made of a cantilevered beam.
Example 6:

uniform wind load of 1 kN/m and a gravity dead load of 18 kN, and a snow load of 72 kN as a
result of supporting a roof in the building. Determine the two loading cases that will assist in
column design.
Hints:

2- Heavy wind loading and companion gravity loading.
Example 7:
The shown column in a building is hinged at its top and bottom ends. It is subjected to a lateral
uniform wind load of 5 kN/m and a gravity dead load of 300 kN, and a live load of 150 kN as a
result of supporting a floor in the building. Determine the two loading cases that will assist in
column design.
Hints:
3- Heavy gravity loading and companion wind loading.
4- Heavy wind loading and companion gravity loading.
Example 8:

2- Heavy gravity loading in the roof and companion gravity load in the floor.
