RQ1
Do you often consider or evaluate the coursebook and material? If yes, please
specify how you have been implementing this action?
Firstly, i must say that the coursebook and materials are the important part in teaching
English. I cannot imagine that without coursebook, how can we teaching effectively, in
term of time for preparations and ground for deliver leanrning objectives.
It is normal that we teachers rarely participate in an offcial evaluations for choosing one
series of coursebook. So talk on this work, I think we better call this a review, or given
remarks to the coursebook ... and package (that are materials included). For my teaching,
I usually take some notes from the coursbook. It may be some interesting information, or
good tips of teaching methods, or some fun games that can be used for future teaching
ect.

So, would you mind explain in detail how you decide that a coursebook is suit for
you, I mean how do you decide the package is good enough?
Well, i think __the effect of the materials on the people using them __. But, for me, i
think coursebook should try to measure some of the following points:
The ability of the materials to interest the learners and the teachers.
The ability of the materials to motivate the learners.
The value of the materials in terms of short-term learning (important, for example, for
performance on tests and examinations.
The value of the materials in terms of long-term learning (of both language and
communication skills)
The assistance given to the teachers in terms of preparation, delivery, and assessment.
The match with administrative requirements.
First, it helped to _. It is convenient to follow the guidelines in syllabus, to teach as in
teacher book show. I assume that the authors did study and arrange content to support
teaching and learning English.
next, content in the coursbook (vocab and grammar in particular) should be adequate and
suitable. I mean, leaners at this age is smart and easy to learn to remember the vocab. We
can see the effectiveness of learning through the quantities of new words and grammar
point that our students can remember and apply.
Another points need to concern is supporting materials. Normally, children in this age
love to play games (but in a “mức độ vừa phải” or we can delivrer the lesson in time!).
And games also help to learn vocab and grammar. Let me give an example, listen and
choose the correct item by tick or circle is easy to prepare and also can warm up.
You mean __.

Could you specify what are your points that you say need to considerate, that is
some kind of criteria, in terms of evaluate a coursebook? Would you mind suggest
your criteria to evaluate the coursebooK’s appropriateness?

I may list out that it include: interests of the learners (or the ability to to motivate the
learning), supporting in preparation and delivery, learning objectives in accordance with
curriculum, authentic language (or i may say the real English),___

So may i summarize your points, some considerations included in your view of

coursebook are __?
Yes, I agrre with these points.
Could you explain in detail?
interests of the learners (or the ability to to motivate the learning),
supporting in preparation and delivery,
learning objectives in accordance with curriculum,
authentic language (or i may say the real English),

What is your point of view on the coursebook evaluation in terms of teaching

speaking skills?
Teach ability of the materials
Flexibility of the materials
Motivate students (confidence to speak, joy to express themselves in 21st century skills)
Short-term goals:
Cultural and global view: (in fit with General curriculum, also international
communicateion in 21 century)

So, in sum, you mean you take the learning objectives or goals first, then the
additional materials or resources, the third point is the content, and finally, the
structure, am i correct?
Yes, I agree with these points that you have just repeated.
So, how do you perceive the coursebook’s evaluation as a user?
To be honest, i think this work is for reseacher in institutions. I must said that it seem not
have any guidelines or course that will show how to evaluate a series of coursebbook. In
our countries, evaluations seem to be odd (strange thing).
How to say, somehow I think this is an essential and useful, and interesting part for
teachers like me, right? Only when we sit back and reflect on the materials, with
students’ learning in my mind, that we may find ways to adapt, adopt and develop the
material, then we can get our teaching efficiently.
Like consumers of a product, we teacher and our students to some extent are the
coursbook users, but a special users. I thonk it should not be reviewed for one and only
one after use, rather it should be think about, with some solid procedure to evaluate, that
we could refine and gain benefits from the coursbook and its materials.
I would like to share my story, personally I agree that prepare the lesson plan is helpful.
There is a time that I wrote the lesson plan many times. But sometime, I don’t have time
to write a lesson plan, and morover, some coursebook so detailed that I simply follow the
step in that and. I just want to say that it seem reasonable to simply follow on the books,
and save the time for other things like correct our students and prepare them for the tests.

RQ2:

Would you mind describing the first impression for the coursebook. For example,
the design, the layout, etc?
... I foound that the book is well-design, and give many kinds of materials. Moreover, as
we can see, the series includes advanced technology support for teaching (with update
features) like, itools, online practice.
When i first saw the series, i expected that students will love to practice, for the reason
that the opportunites for practice is abundance. Layout is so convenient in a point that
students can easy and independent to practice, because the instructions is clear and
simple.

Well, thank you for these information. Then, could you please explain why do you
think these features in the package suitable for your teaching, that is Could you
please suggest some reviews in the first time to see the coursebook?
Encouraging students to practice: with games, projects etcs; english in dai ly life; help
student to express themselves [SLA principles
to allow students to link what they learn in their English classes to other school subjects
such as math, science. In my experience, now parents want their childrens to study
STEAM or others kinds of learning that enhance the intelligence. For this goal, i think the
series could meet.
Opportunities for individual, pair, and group speaking activities occur in every lesson and
the Teacher’s Book includes multiple suggestions for interactive games and activities to
help students review, practice...

Yes, please give some details in the very first access to the package, the
studentbook ?
So how do you describe your evaluation for the books, in terms of teaching
speaking?
to develop students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through activities that
build students’ independence and confidence,
supports the way that children naturally learn: first receptively and then productively.
(teaching methods PPP)
connect new language to what children have already learned and to their own
experiences. Linking and recycling language in this way helps students to learn and retain
English more effectively and to use English to talk meaningfully about themselves and
their everyday lives
Practice and development of these skills global communication, collaboration, and
creativity.
In the Starter Level, this final lesson is a phonics lesson focusing on introducing the
alphabet letters, their sounds, and vocabulary.

What is your point of view on the coursebook in terms of Overall learning

objectives?

Are there any recommendations for the coursebook, in terms of teaching speaking?

I would like to share about one discussion with a parent. The parent ask about whether
we add more grammartical content, and let the students take more quizs and exercises. I
have been explain to them that the coursebook series suit for learning authentic english,
and it must be learned follow the syllabus. Of course, quiz and exercise is necessary in a
appropriate manner.
Besides, some students ask for games regularly. And some seem not to sing a song again
and again. So may be it need to “đa dạng” more.
