Definition
Deforestation means the cutting down, clearing, or removal of forests for human activities such as
agriculture, construction, and industry. It reduces forest area and destroys biodiversity.
Causes of Deforestation
1. Agriculture Expansion
Forests are cleared to create farmland for crops and livestock.
Example: Cutting trees for wheat, rice, or cattle farming.
2. Urbanization
Cities expand and require land for houses, roads, markets, and offices.
Example: Housing colonies built after clearing forest areas.
3. Logging (Wood Cutting)
Trees are cut for timber, furniture, paper, and fuel.
Example: Commercial logging companies cutting wood for export.
4. Mining
Mining for coal, gold, and minerals destroys forest land.
Example: Coal mining in forest regions.
5. Infrastructure Development
Construction of dams, highways, railways, and industries.
Example: Dams like Tarbela covering large forest areas.
6. Forest Fires
Natural or human-made fires destroy thousands of trees.
7. Overgrazing
Animals eat young plants, preventing forest regeneration.
Effects of Deforestation

- Disturbance of the water cycle.

- Global warming and climate change.

Control Measures
1. Afforestation

Cut only mature trees and plant new ones.

Reuse, recycle, and use alternatives.
5. Strict Government Laws
