Introduction
TESOL Methodology 3 is a course that has given me an opportunity to gain a
deeper understanding of what it truly means to become an effective English
teacher. Throughout the semester, I got a wide range of essential knowledge related
to English language teaching, from basic concepts such as what EFL teachers
should know before starting teaching, the syllabus, using materials, teaching
content, and lesson planning, to more practical aspects such as classroom
interaction, classroom discipline, and teacher professional development. Especially,
the theoretical lessons, this course also made me view the teaching profession in a
different way.
The purpose of this reflection is to highlight the most valuable lessons I have
learned and explain how these lessons have influenced my growth and how they
will shape my future teaching practice. Additionally, I gained from experience of
my teacher and experiencing the classroom environment. This also contributed to
my growth as an English teacher.
2. Main body
Unit 1: What EFL teachers should know before starting teaching
+ From the lesson content:
- This unit introduced the essential knowledge and skills that every teacher should
have, including understanding the job of teaching, the school context, and the
students. I also completed an assignment analyzing the school I hope to work at in
the future, the type of students I expect to teach, and my own background as a
future teacher.
- Before studying this unit, I used to think that teaching mainly involved delivering
lessons. After that, I recognized that teaching requires long-term preparation. It
demands cultural awareness, understanding of learners, and a strong sense of
professional identity. These elements help teachers adapt more effectively in their
future teaching environment.
- In the future, I will analyze learner profiles, prepare both emotionally and
professionally, and familiarize myself with the school’s curriculum. This
preparation will allow me to build an effective and supportive learning
environment.
+ From classroom moments:
- One memorable moment was when the teacher shared tips about professional
appearance as a teacher. Professional attire should fit the school rules and match
the nature of the teaching profession.
- This may seem simple, but it is something few people teach formally. Without
this guidance, I might have learned this the hard way through embarrassing
mistakes.
- From this, I learned that even small details, such as how we dress, contribute to
the professional image we project.
- I also had an opportunity to see how to demonstrate the method “Jigsaw reading”,
where learners read different parts of a text and then work together to share
information. I found this method highly collaborative and effective for encouraging
accountability, interaction, and autonomy. It made me realize that well-designed
activities can naturally increase student motivation and participation.
As a future teacher, I will make sure to understand the school’s dress code and
develop a personal style that reflects professionalism and respect for the teaching
profession. Moreover, I will try to design activities such as Jigsaw Reading to
promote effective lesson.
Unit 2: The syllabus

- This unit introduced different types of syllabi and their characteristics. The most
meaningful part was the group assignment analyzing the 2018 English syllabus.
- I got that the syllabus is not just a list of topics but a roadmap that shapes the
entire teaching process and ensures consistency across lessons.
- In the future, I will study carefully the syllabus before planning any lesson to
make sure my teaching objectives, activities, and assessments match both learners'
needs and institutional aims.
Unit 3: Using materials
+ From the lesson content:
- This unit discussed types of materials and how teachers can evaluate and use them
effectively. I also practiced evaluating a textbook. I also had the opportunity to
assess a textbook, which helped me understand its strengths and limitations.
- Previously, I believed that the textbook alone was enough for effective teaching.
After this unit, I realized that teachers must select and adapt materials to match
students' proficiency and engage them, and make them relevant.
- In future classes, I will analyze each lesson closely, adapt activities when
necessary, and incorporate authentic materials such as videos, short stories, and
infographics to make learning more meaningful.

- From observing my teacher, I discovered a teaching technique I had not
consciously noticed before. That is an effective method of activating prior
knowledge. He would begin with something students already knew through a
simple listing activity, then gradually introduce questions that led students toward
new knowledge.
- This method creates curiosity and motivation for reading or watching
accompanying videos to find the answers. I found this strategy highly effective,
flexible, and suitable for different age groups and proficiency levels.
- In the future, I plan to apply this technique in my own teaching to create smoother
transitions between prior knowledge and new content.
Unit 4: Teaching content
+ From classroom moments:
- During the lesson, I observed how the teacher organized the “Draw & Guess”
game as a warm-up. This activity required movement and space, but it effectively
energized the class and encouraged participation. In that lesson, he also emphasized
professional ethics, highlighting the importance of teaching accurate content and
selecting appropriate materials.
- From this experience, I learned that games can serve as powerful warm-up tools
when used appropriately. In addition, teacher ethics is an essential part of choosing
and teaching content responsibly. Teachers must know clearly what they are
teaching to ensure the accuracy of the content and the suitability of the materials.
- In the future, I will always review what I teach carefully to ensure accuracy. I
may also use “Draw & Guess” as a quick and fun warm-up activity because it is
easy to adapt for pairs, groups, or teams.
Unit 5: Lesson planning

- This unit taught me how to design lessons with clear objectives, sequence
activities logically, predict possible challenges, and manage time effectively.
- A well-planned lesson helps the class run smoothly and reduces stress for both
teachers and students. It also ensures that every activity serves a clear pedagogical
purpose.
- In my future teaching, I will begin by writing SMART objectives, selecting
activities aligned with these objectives, and preparing backup plans to handle
unexpected issues. Careful planning will help me manage the class confidently and
deliver lessons more effectively.
Unit 6: Classroom interaction
+ From the lesson content:
- This unit explained interaction patterns such as teacher - student, student -
student, pair work, group work, and whole-class discussion. It highlighted the
importance of learner-centered teaching and reducing excessive teacher talk.
- Interaction is the core of language learning. Teachers should avoid dominating the
class, as this reduces students’ practice time. Encouraging interaction builds
confidence, fluency, and collaboration.
- In future lessons, I will incorporate pair work, group work, discussion tasks, and
supportive activities to maximize student interaction. I will monitor groups instead
of interrupting them so that students can express ideas freely while still receiving
guidance.
Unit 7: Classroom discipline
+ From the lesson content:
- This unit introduced techniques for maintaining order, setting rules, and giving
clear instructions to create a positive learning atmosphere.
- Discipline is essential for effective teaching. A well-managed classroom ensures
smooth learning and reduces disruptions.
- I plan to establish classroom rules from the beginning, apply positive
reinforcement, maintain consistent routines, and stay calm when dealing with
unexpected situations. Good discipline will help me create a supportive space
where learning can flourish.

This was also the final lesson of the course, and it left a deep impression on me.
What touched me most was the moment when the teacher expressed appreciation
for the class and reflected on what we had experienced together was especially
meaningful. As an introverted person, I did not feel confident enough to speak
publicly at that time. However, through this course, the teacher created
opportunities for me to meet new classmates, face challenging tasks, and grow
personally. These experiences taught me the value of stepping outside my comfort
zone.
Unit 8: Teacher professional development

- This unit emphasized that teaching is a lifelong learning process.
- Teachers must continuously update their knowledge, skills, and mindset.
Professional development requires commitment, reflection, and the willingness to
change. Effective teachers are lifelong learners who grow with the evolving world.
- From now on, I will stay open to feedback, seek learning opportunities,
participate in professional communities, and reflect after every teaching experience.
+ From classroom moments:
- During this lesson, I answered five reflection questions. These questions
encouraged me to think deeply about what TPD means, why it matters, and how I
want to develop myself in the future. The question “What kind of professional
development would you like to do in the future? Why?” made me aware of how
much more I need to improve.
- I now understand that becoming a better teacher requires daily effort, self-
awareness, and ongoing curiosity. I will stay open to feedback, seek learning
opportunities, join professional communities, and reflect on every lesson I teach. I
want to grow a little more each day on my journey to becoming a better teacher.
3. Conclusion
TESOL Methodology 3 has offered me both essential theoretical knowledge and
meaningful personal experiences that have helped me grow as a future English
teacher. Through the units, I learned about teaching foundations, syllabus design,
material use, teaching content, lesson planning, interaction, discipline, and
professional development. Through classroom moments, I learned about
professionalism, practical teaching techniques, and small details that greatly
influence classroom success.
Although I still have many areas for improvement, I now have a clearer
understanding of my teacher identity and feel more confident in my teaching
journey. This course has played an important role in shaping my mindset and
preparing me for the real classroom ahead.
