WHAT IS ROCK?
Rocks- are
naturally occurring
solid aggregate of
one or more
minerals.
Petrology- is the
scientific study of
rocks.
Rocks Classification:
1. IGNEOUS ROCKS- rocks that are formed from the solidification of molten
rock material (magma or lava). Magma is a molten rock material beneath the
surface of the Earth. Lava is molten rock material extruded to the surface of
the Earth through volcanic or fissure eruption.
2. SEDIMENTARY ROCKS - these are rocks that formed through the
accumulation, compaction, and cementation of sediments. They generally
form at surface or near surface conditions.
3. Metamorphic rocks- are formed from the transformation of
existing rocks under heat and pressure, resulting in new textures
and mineral compositions.

Rocks Cycle
– The rock cycle- is a natural process that describes how rocks
are formed, broken down, and transformed into different types
over time. It involves three main types of rocks: igneous,
sedimentary, and metamorphic, and various geological
processes such as weathering, erosion, deposition,
compaction, cementation, melting, and crystallization. The
cycle is driven by Earth's internal heat and the hydrological
cycle, which influences the movement of water, ice, and air at
the surface.
