3 INTRODUCTION
The ScanFaker interface card offers glue less connection to a variety of radar displays, including Litton
Bridgemaster, Raytheon, Atlas, Furuno and generic standards.
The card contains a platform independent PCI Express interface and may be used under a variety of OS's.
The scope of this document is to present the different interface options available to the user.
Further, simple maintenance is described.
For programming information and functional description the user is referred to the following documents:

SF4-SFCL-PM-xxx: ScanFaker Control Library programming manual (Under NDA).

It is assumed that the reader has some knowledge of radar terms and principles.

3.1 PCI Express Verification & Possible Issues

The ScanFaker 4 series board is a high performance PCI express board. It has been designed and is
verified to follow the PCI express 1.0 specification. However, on rare occasions the board has failed. Below
are a few solutions listed:
1, Turn off the DMA mode. (Linux only). This can only be performed in the API.
2, Lower the PCI Express bus frequency.
3, Do NOT overclock the Pci Express bus.
4, Turn off spread spectrum. (A known problem on earlier boards).
5, Change the Pci Express drive strength.
6, And finally; change motherboard.

3.2 Brief Functional Description

The heart of the ScanFaker concept is the cards ability to present itself as a transceiver to a radar display.
In order to achieve this there is a minimal amount of functions that the card must support, regardless of
interface type. These functions are:

3.2.1 RADAR SIGNALS

Video
Azimuth Reference
Heading Marker
Trigger
External trigger

3.2.2 CONTROL SIGNALS

Start / Stop
Pulse Length Selection
AFC On / Off
Swept Gain (STC) On/Off
Tune Setting and Feedback

Commercial In Confidence Page 9 of 103

TECHNICAL MANUAL DNP2009006-ScanFaker 4

In addition proprietary protocols are often used to transmit status data. This is usually software related and
will not be discussed in this document.
Other options include pseudo noise generators and jamming noise generators. The inclusion of these
functions is firmware dependent and beyond the scope of this documents.

5 SIGNAL DESCRIPTIONS

5.1 RS422 / RS485 / CAN signals

The differential signals are about + 4.5V in amplitude. (On Ver 4.3 -> the RS422 supply voltage is selectable
between 5V and 12V).
They may also be used instead of their analog counterparts if LVTTL levels are required.
In that case use the + signal and ground the other line at the receiving end.

SIGNAL COMMENTS

Heading Marker Also known as "azimuth reference pulse (ARP)".

1 pulse per antenna rotation.
The pulse length is variable (Radar type dependent)

Azimuth Also known as "azimuth change pulse" (ACP).

Provides a number of pulses per rotation as set in software.
This output is also used as a data output in some configurations (E.G. Sperry BME, Furuno)

Trigger Also known as "synch pulse". One pulse per radar sweep. The pulse length is variable (Radar type dependent).

NMEA Used for the HEHDT sentence, optionally for data out (Consilium).

IO Data 1 For control data input (E.G. Litton, Raytheon), or RS 485 control (JRC, RayMarine).

CAN The CAN bus is used by several as a control / status bus. There are only two pins,
CAN HI and CAN LOW.
Remember to insert JP25 if the ScanFaker is an endpoint.
Up to 100 CAN transceivers may be connected to the same bus.

5.2 Boosting the RS422 signal levels (Ver 4.3 ->)

The RS422 output level can be set using JP10. You may switch between 5V and 12V.

In case the output level needs to be even higher, an external power supply may be used instead of the
internal one. This is especially useful if you need to use the output drivers in single ended mode.

The driver chip has a built in 75 ohms series resistor on each line. So output impedance is 75 ohms. Now, if
you need a 7 volt signal terminated into 50 ohms, the supply voltage requirement is:

Find the resistor divider: 50 / (75 + 50) = 0.4.

Find the required voltage: 7V / 0.4 = 17.5 V.

So the external supply should be at least 17.5V.

Check that peak current is below 200mA: 17.5 / 125 = 140 mA.

It is our recommendation that the power supply is an isolated DC / DC converter attached to the power
supply of the computer.

Ground the power supply in the computer and connect the positive lead to the header pins encircled in
green in the image below:

Commercial In Confidence Page 17 of 103

TECHNICAL MANUAL DNP2009006-ScanFaker 4

For permanent installations, it is advisable to cut the two remaining pins in order to ensure that the
external supply is not fed to the boards internal supply!

5.3 Extended Interface (Header J9)

Is built to order and is only used when simulating:

Video systems requiring simultaneous or synchronized video transmission (MTI, DOPPLER, IFF).
External synchronization.
Additional RS422 /RS485 IO.
WARNING: This interface is not ESD protected.

Standard pin mapping:

SIGNAL PIN COMMENTS

SYNC (Trigger) 7 If the slave jumper is inserted AND external trigger is deselected then this input is used as SYNC reference.

ACP (Azimuth) 5 If the slave jumper is inserted then this input is used as ACP reference (8192 PPR required).

ARP (Heading 6 If the slave jumper is inserted then this input is used as ARP reference.
marker)

Commercial In Confidence Page 18 of 103

TECHNICAL MANUAL DNP2009006-ScanFaker 4

Note that these signals are NOT ESD protected and is connected directly to the FPGA. Ensure that all of
the boards connected as slave has the SLAVE jumper inserted.

5.4 Video Interface

The video interface provides the streaming video output, both standard "generic" unipolar video and bipolar
combined video. During normal operation the standard video level is from 0 to
(+/-) 9 V (no serial termination).
The serial termination is selectable between 0, 25, 50 or 75 ohms . Kindly observe that regardless of the
required video impedance the BNC at the ScanFaker end should always be 75 ohms (signal loss may be
the result if not).
Be aware that the ScanFaker produces very steep edges which may cause distortion when long cable
stretches are used and no serial termination is used at all. If the distance is more than 6 meters then we
recommend using at least the 25 ohm series resistor.

5.5 Non-Differential / Analog Signals

This generic interface is capable of connecting to a wide range of, mostly elder, radar displays.
As a rule of thumb the control signals are only used in Generic Mode.

SIGNAL COMMENTS

Heading Marker Also known as "azimuth reference pulse (ARP)".

1 pulse per antenna rotation.
The pulse length is variable (Radar type dependent).
Configurations:

Closed contact (Relay to GND) (Short jumper J26, remove J27)

Pulsed output (Short jumper J27, remove J26)
(Only one jumper in use simultaneously)

Azimuth Also known as "azimuth change pulse" (ACP).

Provides a number of pulses per rotation as set in software.
The output is normally 11V, but might operate on 5V/11V depending on the current configuration set in software.

Trigger Also known as "synch pulse". One pulse per radar sweep. The pulse length is variable (Radar type dependent).
Will operate properly terminated at 50 ohms and up.
Output level set by JP10 (5V) and JP11 (11V).
(Only one jumper in use simultaneously)

Tune Out A tune feedback signal ranging from –11V to +11V.

Used to indicate whether or not the transceiver is in tune.
The signal has an 8-bit resolution. (Capable of 12 bit for special projects).
Normally only used in generic mode.

Tune In The input accepts a signal ranging from –20V to + 20V.

6 INSTALLATION

6.1 Installing the ScanFaker Board

CAUTION

Electrostatic Sensitive Devices (ESSDs)

This Equipment contains ESSDs. Take care not to damage these devices by discharge of
electrostatic voltages.
Remember to turn of any supply to the computer before inserting the card.

The ScanFaker board requires a PCI Express x1 slot.

Follow these steps:

Ensure that older ScanFaker drivers (if upgrading) are uninstalled.

Power down the system.
Remove the screws that attach the dummy connector bracket to the case.
Install the ScanFaker board, first making sure that no small wires are overhanging the PCI Express
slot. If the card seems difficult to push down, check to see whether the connector bracket is sliding in
properly.
Once the card is firmly in place, replace the connector-bracket screws.
Power up the computer.

6.2 Software Installation

6.2.1 Driver Installation – Windows XP / 7

Insert the ScanFaker Interface Card in an available PCI slot on the host computer.
When the OS ask for driver files, direct the "hardware wizard" to the "ScanFaker Interface Card" on the
"ScanFaker" cd.
The driver does not include a digital signature from Microsoft. When the OS warns the user please select
"continue anyway".
The card will install itself under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers".

6.2.2 Driver Installation – Linux

TBD

6.3 Firmware Update

The firmware is loaded at SfCtrl2 startup. This will occur once after a reboot of the computer.

8 SCANFAKER DISTRIBUTION BOARD

The distribution board is available upon request for customers who use the ScanFaker in a lab environment.
All of the signals coming out of the 25 connector are easily identified on the board.

The board is using a DB25 M-F serial extension cable.

The board also functions as a coaxial interface for installations which requires this type of cabling.

9 SWISS RADAR INTERFACE BOARD

Before ordering, ensure that the pin headers are mounted on the ScanFaker board. Further, that U3 and
corresponding components are mounted. They may not have been mounted on some of the earlier batches
of the ScanFaker 4 series.

The two pulse length control lines from the display must be connected via a 5K resistor in order for
this to work. If not then the input protection circuits will certainly blow.

The Swiss connector J802 pins concerned are V and Q.

Further, do not connect the start/stop signals from the Swiss connector. They are 230V.

The board is available for users that needs to interface to the Swiss Radar JFS series.
The board snaps on to the existing ScanFaker headers. Ensure that you have enough space in the
computer.
Use the STC and GAIN controls to adjust for optimum display of feedback values on the radar screen.
