BRIEF INTRODUCTION
From the typhoon, earthquake, fires, floods, volcano eruption among other
disasters, we had been able to surpass these. We had one another to make it
through. The innate nature of being a Filipino is to be both emphatic and
sympathetic to the difficulties of our fellowmen. And in this time of pandemic, no
one is left unaffected, yet everyone wants to help one another. Because as a
member of our community, we are bound to support those who are in need in our
society even if these include ourselves.

The Discipline of Social Work

Even in our small way we find means to support those who are in need.
Anyone is capable to help. But a hands-on profession that do good and of help to
underprivileged member of our society that undergoes the field of training and
study is called Social Work. According to the International Federation of Social
Workers, “Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline
that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the
empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights,
collective responsibility, and respect for diversities are central to social work.
Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities, and
indigenous knowledge, social work engages people and structures to address life
challenges and enhance wellbeing. The above definition may be amplified at
national and/or regional levels”. Thus, it is an academic discipline and profession

that concerns individual adjustment to his/her environment referred as social
functioning.

GOALS OF SOCIAL WORK

The National Association of Social Workers has conceptualized social work

practice as having five major goals by Zastrow (2009), and we can classify these to
the 3C’s of goal as stated by Dela Cruz (2016)

 The Goal on Caring- this is to develop a sense of personal and societal safety
and security by offering public service through social welfare programs.
o Link people with Systems That Provide Them with Resources,
Services, and Opportunities
o Promote the effectiveness and Humane Operation of Systems That
provide People with Resources and Services
o Promote Human and Community Well-Being
 The Goal on Curing- this is to have a holistic development for physiological,
psychological, emotional and intellectual growth for the deprived members of
the community
o Enhance the Problem-Solving, Coping and Developmental Capabilities
of people
 The Goal on Changing – This is to ensure that social justice and human
rights are being honored by the individual, the society and the government
and be able to design social welfare program to meet its need.
o Develop and Improve Social Policy

SCOPE OF SOCIAL WORK

The widened scope and field of social work is a result of the vast array of human
problems and it is connected to different branches of social science. Dela Cruz
(2016) identified and described the field included in the area of social work. Scopes
are specified but not limited to.

PRINCIPLES AND CORE VALUES OF SOCIAL WORK
These serves as a guiding value on how the member of the organization
shaped their behavior and action in interacting with their clients and other people.
As mentioned by Dela Cruz (2016) the Council on Social work Education identified
and described six (6) values that are shared by the profession of Social Work. (1)
Right to self-fulfillment (2) Responsibility to Common Good (3) Responsibility of the
Society (4) Right to Satisfy basic Needs (5) Social organizations required to facilitate
individual’s effort at self-realization (6) Self-Realization and Contribution to Society.
While he stated, seven principles adhered by the social workers (1) Acceptance (2)
Client’s Participation in Problem Solving (3) Self-determination (4) Individualization
(5) Confidentiality (6) Workers Self-Awareness (7) Client-Worker Relationship

ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF SOCIAL WORK

As what has been said earlier, social work is a discipline and a profession guided
by its principles. It is also present in varied settings. With this context, it is
assumed that the roles and functions of social workers are likewise diverse.

Activity 1.2 What If! (Critical Thinking, Character, Creativity)
Direction: Pretend that you are a Social Worker confronted with the following
cases How will you handle the case? How will you manage the situation, applying

CASE 1: Ana is a senior high school student who as like everybody is affected by
the COVID-19 pandemic. She graduated with honor, but virtual graduation was
held. Supposed to be her OFW father, for 5 years not seeing the family will be back
home for that ceremony but of course that didn’t happen because of the pandemic.
Her mother is a typical housewife that do a buy and sell for their additional income.
But then again, her mother is considered to be a PUI of the virus and had to be
quarantined and later has been hospitalized. Leaving all alone in the house being
the only child, with all these circumstances she feels that her world is falling apart
and having this idea that it is a curse. She also started to disconnect even to her
friends. She feels that they might be affected to her misery and misfortune.

CASE 2: Due to pandemic, the government imposed the quarantine. And resulted
for the increase of domestic violence. One of them is Maria, who is a 15-year-old
child that plays also a mother to her siblings of eight because her mother has just
passed away. Her father is the one who only makes for their living as a cook in the
school canteen. But due to the situation her father lost his job and there is no
income for the family. What make Maria suffers the most is when they are all
beaten up by their father. Such as when he is under the influence of alcohol, when
she cannot give a single penny to him, and there is no food to eat.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Looking around, you may not notice them, but social workers are everywhere.
Just like the variety of individuals, families and communities so as the field of
social work. They can be found in every angle of our community life because it
includes a variety of specialization areas. Social work career paths look different, it
includes a variety of disciplines and workplace settings depending on the type of
social work professionals want to conduct.

 DISCUSSIONS
Going all through these world health issue, we can see the front liners are
everywhere. Not only to classify them as doctors, nurses and army/policemen. But
those who are as well fighting to defeat this pandemic. And of course, these also
includes the social workers. Social works that can be found in many faces and area
of specialization. That indeed still bounded by the values, rights, responsibilities
and accountabilities in which these determine their ethical behavior towards their
clients.

AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION OF SOCIAL WORK

As what has been discussed on Lesson 1 scope of social work are

interrelated to its area. Delacruz (2016) pointed out the specific work areas of social
work in accordance to their specialization, as follows.
