“Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

Good morning, and a very warm welcome to you all.”

Distinguished guests, honorable speakers, valued participants joining us here in the

Theater Room of Universitas PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya, and to our online audience
tuning in via Zoom — welcome to Plenary Session 1 of today’s Colloquium.

Let us begin with gratitude. We are here to explore a theme that is not just timely,
but transformative: “Artificial Intelligence in Education.”

I am Samsul Khabib, and it is my privilege to guide this session.

Before we dive in, I would like to extend our collective thanks to the organizers, the
university leadership, and everyone behind the scenes who made today possible.
A quick note on our schedule:
This session will run from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. We have three distinguished
speakers, each allocated 35 minutes for their presentation. After all three
presentations, we will open the floor for a joint Q&A session, where you—our live
and online audience—can engage directly with the speakers.

Why does this conversation matter?

We are at a crossroads where technology is no longer just an assistant in the
classroom — it is becoming a co-teacher, a curriculum designer, and a catalyst for
rethinking what learning means. AI challenges us to reimagine literacy, pedagogy,
and the very future of education.

This morning, we are honored to host three remarkable voices from across the globe,
each bringing unique insights into how AI can reshape education.
Our first speaker is Mr. Josh Bishop.

Josh is an experienced international educator and digital learning advocate from the
Surabaya Intercultural School. With over a decade dedicated to innovative pedagogy,
he has led several school-wide initiatives integrating AI and educational technology
into curricula. He is widely recognized for his professional development workshops
on future-ready teaching and is a frequent contributor to regional dialogues on
technology in education.

Today, he will challenge our thinking with his provocative presentation titled, “I
Think You Are Doing School Wrong… How AI Could Be the Lever of Change.”

Please join me in giving a warm welcome to Mr. Josh Bishop.

(Pause for applause. Josh Bishop presents.)

Thank you, Josh, for that thought-provoking start.

Our next speaker brings a research-intensive perspective from the global stage.

Prof. Dr. Elchin Gashimov is a distinguished academic and researcher from Samara
National Research University in Russia, specializing in AI applications for personalized
learning. He has published numerous indexed papers on adaptive learning systems
and has been actively involved in international collaborative projects on digital
education frameworks. His work bridges rigorous research with practical tools for
personalizing the educational journey.

He will now share his insights on “AI as a Tool for Personalizing the Educational
Process.”

A warm welcome, please, for Prof. Dr. Elchin Gashimov.

(Pause for applause. Prof. Gashimov presents.)

Thank you, Professor Gashimov, for that enlightening presentation.

Finally, we turn to a voice deeply embedded in the Indonesian educational context.

Dr. Muhaimin Abdullah, [Link] is a respected lecturer and researcher from

Universitas Negeri Surabaya, with a sharp focus on literacy and pedagogical
innovation. He has authored several influential books on contemporary
literacy and actively serves as a consultant for curriculum development with
national bodies. His work is pivotal in redefining what it means to be literate in the
digital age and how our teaching methods must evolve accordingly.

He will conclude our presentations by addressing the theme: “Redefining Literacy,

Reorienting Pedagogy.”

Let's welcome Dr. Muhaimin Abdullah, [Link].

(Pause for applause. Dr. Muhaimin presents.)

After all speakers have presented, you continue:

“Thank you to all our speakers for such insightful and inspiring presentations. We have
heard about AI as a lever for change, a tool for personalization, and a catalyst for
redefining literacy and pedagogy.”

“We will now move into our Q&A session. We welcome questions from both our live
audience and online participants. Please raise your hand or use the Zoom Q&A feature
to submit your questions. We have about 15 minutes for this interactive discussion.”

(Facilitate Q&A. After Q&A concludes, proceed to closing.)

“On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to once again thank our three
speakers for their invaluable contributions and our audience for your engaged
participation.”

“This concludes Plenary Session 1. We will now take a short break. Please reconvene at
11:00 AM for Plenary Session 2 in the same venue. For our online attendees, please
stay connected.”

“Thank you, and have a productive continuation of the colloquium.”

Common questions

Powered by AI

The document implies that integrating AI into educational systems poses challenges such as redefining pedagogical frameworks, updating literacy definitions to match digital advancements, and ensuring educators are both prepared and willing to adopt these changes. Additionally, the potential resistance to shifting traditional roles and curriculums to accommodate AI-based approaches presents a significant challenge .

Dr. Muhaimin Abdullah addresses AI's potential for reshaping literacy by emphasizing that literacy must now encompass digital skills, critical thinking, and adaptability to technological tools. He argues that these changes are crucial to preparing students for future challenges and that AI can facilitate this evolution by offering innovative pathways to integrate these competencies into core curricula .

Josh Bishop envisions AI as a lever of change by challenging conventional educational practices and enabling innovative pedagogy. He proposes that AI could serve as a key instrument in transforming how teaching and learning occur, potentially leading to a paradigm shift where AI aids in creating more engaging, relevant, and effective educational experiences .

Having diverse global perspectives is significant because it highlights the varying applications, challenges, and benefits of AI in different educational contexts. This diversity enriches the discussion by incorporating varied insights that promote a broader understanding of AI's potential and help in tailoring AI strategies to meet specific regional and cultural educational needs .

The document suggests that AI as a 'co-teacher' moves beyond traditional educational technology by actively participating in teaching processes, reshaping literacy, pedagogy, and the educational future itself. Unlike prior technologies which served more as tools for teachers, AI can design curricula and challenge traditional learning paradigms .

Prof. Dr. Elchin Gashimov discusses AI's ability to personalize education by using adaptive learning systems. These systems can tailor educational experiences to individual learner's needs, preferences, and pace, thus enhancing the personalization of the learning journey and making education more relevant and effective for each student .

The document articulates that educators will have to transition from traditional roles to becoming facilitators who integrate AI-driven tools into teaching processes. They will need to embrace AI as a co-teacher, collaborating with it to design adaptive learning strategies and redefine teaching objectives to suit modern educational landscapes .

Samsul Khabib introduces transformative themes such as AI becoming a co-teacher, a curriculum designer, and a catalyst for rethinking educational futures. These themes indicate a shift from AI being a mere assistant to an integral component of the educational process that challenges existing educational concepts and necessitates the development of new educational models .

Dr. Muhaimin Abdullah highlights that AI's challenge to traditional literacy and pedagogy involves redefining what literacy means in the digital age. This redefinition requires a fundamental shift in teaching methods, orientating them towards integrating these new forms of literacy. AI can prompt educators to reconsider existing pedagogical frameworks and adjust them to better accommodate and leverage new digital tools .

Dr. Muhaimin Abdullah provides a perspective that emphasizes the integration of AI within the Indonesian educational context, focusing on literacy and pedagogical innovation. He underscores the need for redefining literacy to include digital competencies, aligning teaching methods to contemporary demands, and using AI to facilitate this transition in the education system of Indonesia .
