Ultimate Guide

to vertical videos:

The formula of the TikTok and Reels

algorithm and how to shoot a video

for 1M views.
Hello, my friend!
My name's Tim, I'm a TikTok producer. My job here is to create
vertical videos for big names and personal brands.

For 2021, I've worked on 62 accounts, garnered brand accounts

more than 1,000,000 followers, and my videos have gotten

a combined total of over 300,000,000 views.

In short, I know what

I'm talking about!

And here is the content

of this powerful checklist:

Why would you shoot vertical videos

Comparison of vertical video platforms

How to grow your audience and unlock the full potential

of organic traffic

One more thing

List of niches that are great on TikTok

TikTok video formats, which should be used

Mistakes to Avoid

One more thing.

Madness! Let's get started.

Why would you shoot

vertical videos?

This checklist and vertical videos will be useful:

For those who want to develop their personal brand

For those who want to start their own online business

Marketers / SMM specialists / PR managers of large businesses

Small and medium business owners

Those who develop a personal brand, but do not know what

vertical videos are and how to use them.

And let's get straight to the point: the best way

to grow any brand online is to grow it organically.

Why:

Fast, if you know how.

Effective, as the audience is live.

Reliable. The audience that you have built organically will

stay with you for a long time.

What social networks

and tools are currently

offering organic growth?

Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, IG. The last three promote
organically ONLY vertical rollers. So, if you learn how

to shoot them correctly, you can build your brand on three social
networks at the same time (we'll talk about this later).

Vertical videos are the fastest way to build a strong online brand

in 2022.

But it will end.

Every social network at the dawn of its existence offers users organic
traffic (since there are fewer creators than consumers), but as soon
as the number of content consumers and its creators is compared

(as happened with Instagram posts),

the platform stops bringing organic traffic.

Therefore, you need to act quickly. The next two years are

a window of opportunity for new brands. Your task is to start

working on content now, so that in two years you will have a strong
position in these social networks and continue to receive traffic

from them.

Bad news: The best time to start filming TikTok is 2020.

Good news: the second best time is 2022. Don't miss

this opportunity!

Let's compare the platforms

where you can lay out

a vertical video

Two years ago, there was no such diversity as it is now,

but here are the most relevant platforms for 2022 (arranged

by importance):

1TikTok 2Reels IG 3YouTube Shorts

Organic search algorithms work best on these sites. However,

you can also post videos on FB, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat,

if these social networks are relevant to you.

Further in the checklist, I will only talk about the three main
platforms.

TikTok
It all started with it, and it still remains the leader in the vertical
industry. I think TikTok will retain its leadership for at least

the next year.

Advantages of TikTok over the rest:

1ItThisis more interesting for users.

happens thanks to the recommendation algorithm,

which no competitor could fully copy. TikTok knows what
you want to watch. We will talk about this algorithm below,
just fix it for yourself now: TikTok.

2It'sThemore minimalistic.

rest of the services released a vertical feed in addition to their

features, TikTok is ONLY vertical videos. Yes, they added Lives,
Stories, etc, but vertical videos are still the very center of TikTok
content. And if you have studied the basics of marketing, you should
know that the fewer choices buyers have, the greater the conversion
to a sale will be. The effect of “dividing eyes” from diversity is scary.

3Users are willing to watch long content.

2-3 minutes is already normal for TikTok.

In reels, such videos do not float everyone’s boat.

Reels IG
Instagram was the best at copying TikTok's algorithms.
Even in several places, it was able to surpass it. Here

are the benefits of IG over TikTok:

1Video editor is more convenient.

Yes, I like the internal video editor in IG more than in TikTok,

it looks more mature and holistic. You can shoot and edit videos

on IG without any problems.

2More options for contacting the audience.

The user after watching your videos can see stories, posts,

and relevant information. This opens up excellent opportunities

for building sales funnels and warm-ups, which is much more
difficult to do on TikTok.

Youtube Shorts
I have not used YouTube Shorts either for myself or for clients,

so I have a biased opinion about them.

I think it is worth posting there only if you are going to develop

YouTube.

You can use here your videos from TikTok and Reels,

or make cutting montages from full-fledged YouTube videos.

Platform strategy:

I advise you to shoot content adapted to TikTok

(80% of the video), the rest (20% of the video) to adapt

to the Reels.

After the first month of work, look at the statistics, and then adapt

100% of the content to the platform that worked better, and simply

re-upload the content to the second one.

Life hack: platforms love it when you use their video editors (they

give such videos more views), but editing a video on each platform

separately is too laborious, here's what you need to do: edit

the entire video in a third-party editor, apply all subtitles except

for the title. Overlay the title in each social network separately using

their branded fonts.

You need to learn the rules and algorithms of the platform you're

going to work on.

3 Top Tips for Growing Your

Audience Through Vertical Videos

Tip #1: Learn the rules and algorithms of the platform you're

going to work on.

I'm going to give you a TikTok example, but these rules

are compatible with Reels as well.

It is really important to comprehend the appetite of the platform

before you start making videos. TikTok's main goal is to keep

the user's attention. TikTok is interested in having users spend as

much their time on this app as possible. Based on this,

the platform benefits from promoting (showing in the FYP) those

users who hold the audience's attention with their videos.

You just need to figure out how to do it. In the meantime, we'll

be telling you about the main indicators by which TikTok determines

whether a video is relevant or not.

Indicators and their value on TikTok:

• Video rewatches (6 points)

• Watching the video till the end (5 points)

• Shares/reposts (3 points)

• Comments (2 points)

• Likes (1 point).

The secret formula of the TikTok algorithm

6 (if reviewing the video) + 5 (if viewing to the end) + 4

(if share) + 2 (if comment) + 1 (if like) = video rating per user

The higher this rating, the more views you will get.

As you can see, likes are what many people are mindlessly chasing

and don't have that much impact on TikTok. If a user watched

a video till the end, but they didn't like it, it will be a lot more help

to promote the video than if they liked it before even finishing

watching it.

This is the logic you need to follow while making videos; focus

on creating content that everyone wants to watch and rewatch

several times.

This video, for example has 2,2 BILLION views.

TikTok doesn’t have so many users, which means viewers have

t
been watching this video over and over again enjoying

a
p

the script and performance.

Tip #2: Use killer hooks

80% of your success on TikTok depends on the first two or three

seconds of your video. What are you exactly talking about at this

moment? Your hooks must be “killing” so that your viewers won't

just swipe down your video.

Here are the best 10 hooks for May 2022:

• “If you struggle with …, watch this”

• “[Target group], I need your opinion”

• “I can't believe I lived without …”

• “TikTok made me buy …”

• “What will happen if … dies”

• “What if I have a …”

• “If you haven't tried …, watch this!”

• “3 Reasons Why I Love …”

• “Don't buy that, buy this instead!”

• “I tried every … out, and here are the results”

Mass media has been doing that for the last 50 years,

now it's your time to hook your audience's attention

with only one title!

Tip #3: Keep your audience's attention

Great, you've used a killer hook and grabbed your viewer's attention

to watch your video—what will you show them next? Is your video

worth its title?

Here are some basic tips for improving your video:

• Use short phrases instead of long and complex sentences.

• Change your shot every 3 seconds so that your viewers won't get

bored (If it's not possible, use “Zoom In & Out” for constant

dynamism).

• Add what you're saying to the subtitles.

• Speak fast, but clearly.

• Add something funny or ridiculous to the background; your viewers

will positively comment upon this.

One more thing:

Yes, these are just the basic concepts of the TikTok and Reels
algorithms that I can pack into a checklist.

This topic can be expanded further, including topics that remain

untouched

What is the best video structure

How to build a sales funnel through vertical videos
How to monetize an account
How to speed up subscriber growth
How to get ER more than 10% on video.

There are so many topics that it is simply impossible to fit them into
one checklist. I don’t have a full-fledged course, I don’t think that

I will launch this product in the near future, since I have a decent
workload on agency projects.

For those of you who understand that TikTok has the potential

to become its main channel for audience acquisition and sales, I can
only offer my personal advice. I highly recommend it if you are
serious about promoting through vertical videos. In an hour

of consultation, I can tell much more than in a 10-page checklist. You
can read about the consultation and choose the time here:

TikTok video formats,

which should be used?
Formats for expert content
Talking head:

In my opinion, this is the main video format for expert content.

Such videos have taken root perfectly on TikTok, now their length
can reach up to 3 minutes and users watch them with pleasure.
The main thing in this format is the correct hook

and the dynamics of the narrative. You can't be boring.

Lists:

A format that also allows you to reveal your expertise,

but at the same time it is easier to remove it. It should be used

by beginners, which still cannot keep the attention of the audience

with its storytelling for a long time. Usually such videos last 6-10

seconds.

Here is a great structure:

3 seconds: bright and interesting picture (perhaps your head with

an interesting background) + CRAZY interesting Hook

4-6 seconds: the main part of the video with the text on the screen

and the disclosure of the topic

Due to the fact that it is impossible to read the text in 6 seconds,

users will have to re-watch the video and pause it. Algorithms

consider this additional involvement and promote the video

further.
Question-answer:

Interview format.

Questions can be asked by an interlocutor who is not

visible in the frame, or you can read the question

yourself from the phone. In these hook videos, there

is a question, so you should choose the most frequent

questions that you receive so that the audience reacts

to it and watches the video to the end.

Responses to comments:

The format is the same as a question and answer, but

in this case you are sending a response to a real user

on a comment, which means that you encourage others

to ask their questions in the hope that you will answer

them too. This increases audience engagement.

Tutorial:

If you are able to explain

to the audience one of the methods,

link

schemes, technique from your niche

in 1 minute, do it! Use a dynamic frame

change, as in the example. Create

a 1-2-3 instruction for each.

And don't forget the Hook.

Formats for product

content:

Faceless video:

I'm not a fan of these videos, especially if all of your

content is faceless, but they'll get a lot of views,

link

so it's worth knowing how they're made. Most often,

even the voice acting on such videos is performed

by a special program, and not by a real person. You can

tell the main advantages of your product, how to use it,

a funny story, and anything in general, the format itself

will work for you.

Unpacking:

Such a video will be successful if your

Hook and the appearance of the box

in the first seconds of the video

link

are successful. Most often, if the user

stays in the first 3 seconds,

he will watch to the end. Tip: get rid

of unnecessary frames, leave only

the most juicy ones, and show users

the unpacking process with dynamic

music.
Pain – solution:

Hook in such a video should

accurately highlight the target

audience. It sounds something like

this: “Have you

also encountered problem X,

if so, then here is the solution: ...”.

Thus, you will separate your target

audience from the general mass

and sell the product.

Oddly-satisfying video:

A great way to show off an oddly-satisfying product

is with an oddly-satisfying video. Apart from your

product and Hook, you will not need anything else))

Mistakes to Avoid:
1Don't use popular hashtags.

#top,#trends,#tiktoktop, etc. simply don't work.

Use only one or two of your niche hashtags instead.

2Use only royalty-free music for your brand account.

Otherwise, it'll be a copyright infringement.

3Don't use more than two hashtags.

TikTok doesn't recommend videos using several hashtags. And

the description will look better if you use only one or two hashtags.

4Upload in Full HD.

This way, your videos will be smoother, and TikTok won't

compress them to upload faster.

Don't show a child without parental supervision.

5
The age restriction for TikTok is 13+.

A video featuring children will be limited on its reach.

If there are children on camera, there must be their parents.

6Don't show knives (even the kitchen ones).

Such videos are a violation of community guidelines

and will be blocked.

7Don't reupload videos.

f you want to reuse an old video, change it a little bit.

Add a few frames, flip it vertically. The main thing is: they
mustn't be identical.
8Native ads to direct ones.

Instead of“Follow the buy link in bio“say,

“If you're interested, I've left the link in the description“.

9Posting time doesn't matter.

A good video will get a lot of views even if it's 2 AM

One more thing:

Blimey! You have read everything. Now you know enough to shoot
your first video or improve existing content. It remains only to act!

Special bonus: if you want to get praise from me, send me on Twitter
or LinkedIn the link to the video that you will make according

to the tips from the checklist and I will personally praise you!

Do you want more? Post about this checklist and your video
and I'll repost it to my page :))

Anyway, I have a suggestion for you:

TikTok and Reels are extremely dynamic platforms, this checklist will
be updated, but not more than once a month and new features and
ideas will appear constantly. Therefore, be sure to subscribe
