LESSON PLAN FOR WEEK SIX ENDING 20TH OCTOBER, 2023

SUBJECT: COMPUTER STUDIES

TOPIC: INPUT DEVICES
CLASS: JSS 2
TIME DURATION: 80 Mins

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
 Define Input devices
 List examples of input devices and their functions
ENTRY BEHAVIOUR: Computer works on signal/input it receives. This inputs are sent to the system
via input devices. Without this devices, there is no way computer can receive inputs hence there won’t be
processing which leads to information.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY: The students will be engaged in whole-group discussion, peer
tutoring and cooperative learning.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Laptop, projector, pictures of some input devices, videos of how
they work.
CONTENT DEVELOPMENT: This note is developed by explaining elaborately on the specific
objectives
PRESENTATION
INPUT DEVICES
Definition: Input device is any hardware device that sends data to a computer, allowing you to interact
and control the system.
Input device is a piece of computer equipment or hardware which helps us enter data into a computer.
EXAMPLES OF INPUT DEVICES
1. Barcode Scanners (Readers)
A barcode is a series of dark and light parallel lines of varying thickness numbering 0-9 and each
represented by a unique series of lines. Barcode can be quite long because it represents:
 The country where it was issued
 Manufacturer of the product is captured
 Product identification
How it works
Let’s assume that each blank line corresponds to ‘0’ or ‘1’ and each white line ‘OFF’ or ‘ON’
Steps
 Scanning head shines LED or Laser light onto barcode
 Barcode is reflected back into light-detecting electronic component called photoelectric cell
 Scanner scans barcode, generates a pattern of ‘ON -- OFF’ pulses (e.g black, black, white will
be
“ON, ON, OFF---110)”
 The digits are sent for further interpretation
 A lookup in the DB is carried out to pick the product details
NOTE: Barcode scanner is a hand-held or stationary input device used to capture and read
information contained in a barcode (country, manufacturer and product information)
2. Quick Response (QR) Codes
Another type of barcode made up of a matrix of filled-in dark squares on a light (white)
background. This can hold more information compare to the conventional one explained above
(Barcode)
QR Code Description
 Consist of block of small squares (light and black) known as pixels (Picture elements)
 It can hold up to 4296 characters (or up to 7089 digits)
 It can accommodate internet address to be encoded within the QR Code
 The 3 large squares at the corners are used for alignment
 The remaining small corner square by your right is used for measuring accurate size and angle of
the camera.

Uses of QR code
 Product advertisement
 Automatic access to website or contact telephone number
 Storing boarding passes electronically at airports and train stations
NOTE: A newer development of QR code called “frame QR Codes” are new in use because of
increased ability to add advertising logo. This can include graphics or images in it
3. Digital Camera
A modern digital camera replacing the traditional camera that depended on film to capture image
comes with USB port (Universal Serial Bus) and Bluetooth for wireless transfer among other
features. Most camera use a 24-RGB system (each pixel has 8 bits representing the 3 primary
colours--- Red, Green and Blue). Each pixel has 0-255 (denary). Shade of orange could be
215(red), 165(green) 40(blue)
= 1101 0111 1010 0101 0010 1000.
4. Keyboard
They are by far the most common method used for data entry. A standard keyboard (Desktop) has
101 keys which include alphabetic characters, punctuations symbols, numbers and variety of
function keys. Frequent use of these device can lead to injuries such as RSI [Repetitive Strain
Injury] in hands and wrists.

Ergonomic keyboard is designed to fit you rather than you having to adjust yourself to fit the
keyboard. It prevents and reduces:
 Strain of constant typing on wrist
 Musculoskeletal problems (e.g RSI)
NOTE: Ergonomic relating to or designed for efficiency and comfort in the working
environment. E.g Ergonomic keyboard design
TYPES OF KEYBOARD
There are four major type of keyboards:
1. QWERTY
2. AZERTY
3. DVORAK
4. QWERTZ
Other type of keyboards include:
5. Apple Macintosh Keyboard also called ADB (Apple Desktop Bus)
6. Ergonomic
7. Personal Systems or PS/2
8. Multimedia
9. Wireless
10. On-Screen etc
FUNCTIONS OF KEYBOARD
 Used to input data
 Used to input commands/instructions
 Provides quick access to menu on the system
5. Mouse: Two major types of mouse are mechanical and optical/laser mouse.
Uses of Mouse
 Used for pointing, clicking, double-clicking, right-clicking and dragging

Mechanical mouse Optical Mouse

Contains a rubber ball that makes the cursor move Can work on any surface (both smooth and rough)
Not very robust Dirt cannot enter in any of its components
Needs constant cleaning to remove dirt on the
rollers and the ball for smooth running.

6. OCR (Optical Character Recognition)

This is a computer-based technology that converts images of text into text. It converts text on digital
image into editable text files.
It can be used for
 recognizing license plates
 making scanned documents searchable
 making book searchable by digitalizing their text
 Identifying passengers and extracting information etc.
