Narrative Reflection of Four Exercises That Are Vital in the Development of the Research and

Architectural Interventions in the Context of Correctional Design

QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS

• Capturing Human Experience and Perceptions – Qualitative analysis is essential in understanding the
status and lived experiences of all the people who are involved in the issue. It provides insights into
attitudes, behaviors, and social dynamics that cannot be quantified, but are critical in shaping
architectural framework for a new correctional design.
• Centralization of the Research – In this way, qualitative analysis becomes the unifying axis of the study,
ensuring that proposed correctional designs are not only functional and compliant but also responsive to
the deeper goal of the research.
• Contextualizing the Research – Creating a tabulation of facts, issues, objectives and ways on how an
issue will be solved with architectural interventions. It will be used as a guide for the development of
architectural interventions.

QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS

• Establishing Evidence-Based Standards – Quantitative analysis provides the measurable data needed
to define space requirements, occupancy rates, and programmatic allocations. This ensures that designs
are aligned with local and/or international benchmarks while addressing special issues and operational
inefficiencies.
• Enabling Functional Efficiency – By calculating spatial ratios, inmate-to-facility provisions, and
circulation patterns, quantitative studies optimize the layout for security, accessibility, and rehabilitative
programming. This prevents underutilization or over-concentration of resources within the correctional
complex.
• Supporting Scalability and Policy Formulation – Quantitative findings offer replicable standards that
can inform modern correctional planning. This allows future facilities to adopt a consistent framework
adaptable to different sites and population sizes, strengthening long-term prison reform strategies.

ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOR STUDIES

• Examining the Dynamic Relationship Between People and Spaces – This approach emphasizes how
users interact with their physical environment and how these interactions influence collective behaviors
under different spatial settings. Such understanding is vital in correctional settings where spatial
constraints and environmental conditions directly affect psychological well-being and social conduct.
• By critically assessing the components of spatial settings – It can relate and helps to validate which
architectural and environmental elements such as lighting, acoustics, circulation, and access to nature can
significantly impact users’ experience. This process allows the researcher, which is also the designer, to
identify the major concerns that must be addressed to create spaces that are adequately functional,
humane and restorative.
• Serving as a foundation for evidence-based design – This method provides empirical guidance for
developing architectural interventions that are not only theoretically sound but also practically effective.

CODE REVIEW AND APPLICATION

• Ensuring Compliance with Legal and Technical Standards – Reviewing applicable building codes, local
and/or international correctional guidelines ensures that the proposed facility is safe, lawful, and
structurally sound.
• Integrating Security and Rehabilitation Requirements – Codes provide critical benchmarks for safety,
fire protection, accessibility, and security measures. Their integration into design supports the dual
objective of protecting society while upholding the rights and dignity of inmates.
• Strengthening Institutional Accountability and Sustainability – Code application ensures that
facilities are not only compliant at the point of construction but are also sustainable in terms of
maintenance, adaptability, and long-term operational efficiency.
