Impact of Technology on Communication Issues
Impact of Technology on Communication Issues
The main consequences of technology that impact our daily lives are the
dificultad para comunicarnos y relacionarnos con otras personas, por lo que se debe tener
special care not to fall into this type of situation.
Adam Fagen
There are many debates about whether new electronic media have impoverished
our language and the ability to communicate and express ourselves, and this may be a
a question that we would each have to answer individually, but the truth is
that, the way we communicate today has undergone a significant
transformation. If we go back to analyze the changes that have occurred in the
writing technologies throughout human history will become evident
that all have had consequences in social practices.
Many times the way of communication is homogeneous only for a certain type of people,
Depending on their age, the place where they live, the environment in which they interact, the
education and even the socioeconomic status to which they belong. However, the means
electronics and, above all, social networks have managed to break through those barriers through
the creation of new language codes that enable oral communication and
writing independently of the individual's characteristics.
Although, many times the use of technology is promoted in areas such aseducation,
We must consider developing strategies where it is always used as a tool.
to not diminish the importance of other more important educational processes such as the
written communication and reading.
Before chatting, no one had ever written so much -digitally- and so poorly. There is no
chat language, but rather deformities of the language. And, in this sense, if we promote the chat

society and that has a greater impact on young people.
As a teacher, it is easy to detect the difficulty that students have when it comes to
communicate their ideas and the enormous number of errors that appear in their texts
writings. Has technology only managed to disable us? I don't think so. As in
many aspects of life, in this case technology can only influence (positively or
negatively) but does not determine the behavior of a certain individual or certain group
of people.

In this report, we will investigate the social and psychological causes of the problem, in addition to
propose certain solutions for the problem and the methods of how to apply them today.
this way that personal societal custom can be recovered, not from a society that is
focus on what happens on the network, but on what is most important, what is in front of you, the family and
friends.
The problem
We can identify that most people involved in the loss of relationships
interpersonal, are young people, who belong to a generation where the agility of the
instant messaging even replaces phone calls; the other sector of people
involved are between approximately 20-50 years old, where the use of the
smartphones, tablets, and laptops are essential for work, making one gradually lose a little
A time without all these advances and they are continuously isolated from society due to lack of interaction.
within this new lifestyle of society.
The role of communication companies.
Although the elderly are the ones most affected, they are the first to use this means to
distract or meet the needs of their children to be able to cover their absence during the hours that
they are absent while they are at their businesses or workplaces.
Access to technology degenerates from a growth in production in businesses, the
companies as they increased their production, increased the hours and over time better
remunerations.
So companies are increasingly forced to be better in their communications, that is to say, it is so
high demand that communication companies have more affordable prices and to
availability of any person, which helps by giving the entire country the option to be
connected, but are we taking advantage of this opportunity?
That's why we take this approach to technology, because if it weren't for this approach we could talk
much of what does us good to the right uses.
Technology will not always have or present negative aspects, but we must react to the
negative consequences, because these are the ones that make us increasingly less interested in
our family sphere.
Marketing
While we cannot blame technology companies for supplying the population with their increasingly ...
more attractive, products, we can blame the marketing area and the sales capacity it has
each company. These areas are responsible for promoting the dependence on each of its products in
us, to the point that there are people who cannot be separated from certain devices for a minute
electronics. They make us believe that without those devices we are not useful and we could not continue with
our day to day, managing to convince more and more children, young people, and adults each day to buy those
products.
Then, the marketing department is responsible for making us believe that those devices, the same ones that...
they sold it 1 or 2 years ago, it has no value anymore, and we should buy the new generation to
to be 'in fashion'. This last aspect causes problems in society, as if a person does not have what
latest in technology, and instead of that, it has something very old, it is looked down upon by society and
discriminated.
The media or technology.
Video games: Children who spend a large part of their free time using video games in the
computer or on some specific console, they often bring serious attention problems with them,
concentration or sight, but we will focus on the damage they do to personality
of the individual. These can cause the child to immerse themselves in a world of fantasy, taking away a
great vision of reality in relation to personal relationships, their perceptions and opinions can
to be influenced by those of the video game, causing them to change their way of thinking and relating.

The Smartphone: They have been the latest sales 'boom' in Peruvian youth society. They are phones
cell phones that have the ability to connect to the internet and the different social networks it offers.
This device generates the greatest social communication problem due to its portability, you can
use anywhere on a desktop or laptop computer. Young people no longer call for
phone, they only write on their phones with a certain number of letters and commands that
they substitute words to be able to communicate with each other.
Tablets, laptops, and desktop computers also contribute to the decrease in activity.

limited ability to connect to the internet from anywhere, they will need a WIFI network,
since the mobile prepaid data systems for this type of devices are not yet available
full operation in the country.

The work
The dimensions of the work of telecommunications and technology companies:
1) Objective: To keep people connected through television, internet, or phone, in addition to
to provide them with new technological experiences such as high definition movies or different
video games.
Subjective: Telecommunications companies improve with the technological advancements that come
emerging over time. If better equipment and technology are available, it will be possible to maintain a better
communication.
3) Intersubjective: The work carried out by the different telecommunications companies in the

internet, phone, or cable services in the province.
Paradigms of work:
1) Modern: It would be based on a capitalist company that solely focuses on selling the greatest amount of
products regardless of whom you sell them to, for example, you could convince a low-income lady

that others use it and take advantage of it like sharing a game or lending the phone to someone

b) Service prices: There should be a balance between the different prices charged for the

it happens with the electricity or water bill, but in many cases it is not.
Justice
Justice is a habit of the soul that, respecting common utility, gives each one what they deserve.
In our community and society, we find that this is not always the case. Let's take the case of the
families and technology. Currently, parents feel the duty to be able to cover the
material needs of their children, since we are in a time when artifacts are seen
technological tools as something indispensable to be able to live; because of this, sometimes a certain thing is lost.
manera la justicia, ya que no todos reciben o se les da lo que merecen, en el sentido material y
sentimental.
On the other hand, relationships between individuals are deteriorating because many of the
technological products create indifference towards the environment surrounding oneself, and in extreme cases
it leads to violence by some people. These products cause both to go
opposite extremes of justice, indifference, and violence.
Charity
On the side of charity, we can first observe the interest that the technology industry,
communications and video games possess. A logical interest, where it 'gives to have'. This market acts
in this way, one offers the different products which would be 'giving' the customer an alternative of
entertainment, communication, or the use that one wants to give to the product, and the 'having' would be the
monetary compensation that the client offers in exchange for the product. In second place comes the state, the
which 'gives as duty', but the state is in charge of regulating companies and therefore 'gives' them the
facilities to be able to develop within the markets, that is due to having a "duty" as an entity
regulator.
Now on the side of families, the gratuity and solidarity are somewhat lost as it is seen as
one expects to receive these artifacts, because it is the duty of parents to grant them. And the indifference that
The use of these artifacts worsens attitudes of gratuity and solidarity.
Culture
As we know, culture is the common expression of a people. The set of values and the medium by
in which man expresses the richness of his personality in all its dimensions.
In our day-to-day lives, we see how technology is being integrated with our culture. It can be
seeing on the streets, everywhere, people either with cell phones, smartphones, or other devices
technological manipulating it in one way or another, turning all these devices into part of our
society.
Technology, in our opinion, negatively influences our culture, as it distances us from what
On the other hand, there is a phrase that makes us think about how we are managing technology in our
lives: In culture, a man is worth much more for what he is than for what he has. We believe that
our society is taking the dimension of having in this aspect down the wrong path. We are
believing that the more technology we have, the better people we will be, or we will be better than the
others. However, this does not lead us anywhere, as we do not adapt to the
technology, but we dominate it.
Children may misunderstand all of this and feel that they will be better people if they have
the best things, including the best technology.

Today, more than ever, societies seem to existentially depend on technology. According to scholars in
psychology like Kenneth Gergen from Swarthmore College, we are increasingly involved in more relationships, not
only in increasingly numerous forms, but also with greater intensity than ever. (Rifkin, 2000) The latest
technological innovations have created a phenomenon in which human beings only seem to be able to exist if they are
connected.
Mobile phones, voicemail, faxes, and emails keep us in instant communication with
people from all over the world. Our networks—both social and economic—engage us in even more
varied (…). There is not just time left, any free moment becomes an opportunity to establish
another connection. We live in a world where attracting and maintaining attention is essential, where there is no
relationship without importance. A new motto replaces the Cartesian 'I think, therefore I am': 'I am connected, therefore'
"I exist". (Rifkin, 2000, p. 128)
Because this new conception of the reality of human existence impacts our daily lives with
an almost inconceivable speed, we have selected for this final work the reflection on interaction
communicative in virtual spaces, specifically social networks from the Toronto School.
It is worth noting that the focus of our work will not be on the analysis of technical tools, such as the
devices and smartphones that allow such connectivity, nor the structural architecture of their
platforms, that is to say social networks, blogs, forums, etc. What we intend is to understand, on one hand, how and with
who communicate with each other in social networks today and, on the other hand, how these
platforms influence their communicational behavior.
To this end, we will rely on the evaluations from an online survey conducted with a probabilistic sample of one hundred.

an age between 17 and 66 years. The evaluations will allow us to refine the profiles of the members
from the respective platforms and relate them to the digital natives proposed by Alejandro Piscitelli (2006).
Digital natives would be those individuals who have grown up immersed in digital technology. "According to certain

We can affirm that our lives are and have always been marked by technological advancements. The

"the size of stone tools to the Internet" (Carlón and Neto, 2012).
The evident dependence on digital devices, smart cell phones, and constant access

it is the message" and that it has become impossible for us to become independent from "its personal, political consequences,

Cyberspace has transformed the fiction of a real-time response into a reality of the 'electronic age'.
(Sempere, 1975) Unlike the "isolation and alienation of the masses" (Wolf, 1994) postulated in the Theory
Hypodermic, we can observe that the 'training process of virtual communities via the network' is constituted
from "the search for contact between individuals or groups that have common ideas, interests, and/or tastes"
allowing for the first time an 'equal interactive communication'. (Maldonado, 1998) Good examples are the
groups that are generated on social networks like Facebook, Twitter or Hi5, linked by their interests in a myriad
on topics such as sports, music, art, design, fashion, or literature. The online survey conducted with one hundred
people show that most Facebook users join recreational interest groups and
professional, that allow them to connect based on shared interests.

in the concept of individual autonomy. Personal autonomy leads to multiple relationships,
further undermines the idea that discreet boundaries separate what is one's own from what is foreign." (Rifkin, 2000) But this phenomenon
it can be perceived from two opposing perspectives. On one hand, it can be criticized that such 'fragmentation of the
representations of the self correspond to a multiplicity of incoherent and disconnected relationships” (Rifkin,
2000). On the other hand, we could stipulate that what the current electronic era finally generates is the
formation of a true "global village in the neonationalist era." (De Kerckhove, 1999)
Thus, digital natives accept social networks naturally as an environment in which they establish relationships.

They preserve relationships and friendships across distances.
1999) We are still in a stage of history in which powerful ideologues and religious leaders
they even take advantage of cyberspace to sow hatred and feed radicalization among groups, peoples and
congregations. It sometimes seems impossible to overcome the 'nationalisms, separatisms, and local conflicts that
appear daily on our television screens." (De Kerckhove, 1999) While the reach and speed

we intend to continue the comparison of its structure with neural networks. Rather, it seems to us that as
All systems, including the quantitative differences among individuals, seek to achieve greater order.
We can apply entropy as a metaphor as the law of thermodynamics according to which every system tends to
decrease its degree of entropy to attain greater order. Let's say that, in the same way, our system of
multiplied differences is characterized by a very high entropy and tends to decrease it, which leads to the 'accumulation
of quantitative differences can culminate in a qualitative leap." (Carlón & Neto, 2012) In this way, what

They represented revolutionary paradigm shifts, having been objected to and/or harshly criticized at the beginning.
It seems that human beings fear the unknown simply because discovering something new feels
unable to capture their possible consequences. This does not happen in the same way in all cases; the more
young people are the most affected by the respective discovery, invention, or paradigm shift. From the
perspective of the epistemological constructivism of Gaston Bachelard, scientific progress and the acquisition of
knowledge requires epistemological cuts, the rejection of previous knowledge to acquire new ones
knowledge. The closed mind is, according to Bachelard (2000), an epistemological obstacle.
Because it is the young people who initiate and carry out the revolutions, thus shaping the future,
we object to the claim that equal interactive communication on the Internet does not represent a type of
communication suitable for achieving a substantial enrichment of democratic life. (Maldonado, 1998) Both the
peaceful revolutions of the Arab Spring, like the most recent protests in Argentina, corroborate
exactly the opposite. We agree that for such manifestations 'the rapid communication through the Network
it has served to give them their own characteristics, such as spontaneity and a clear absence of leadership.
Indeed, in the Egyptian case, 'Internet proved to be so important that it was prohibited by the government along with the
mobile phones and, days later, the TV network Al Jazeera, which was precisely broadcasting 24 hours of the uprisings in

Conclusions
According to the reviews made in the development of this research, it can be stated that the result of
The advancement of technology leads us to become more and more involved with its use. It is proven that social media
they address a large amount of information and global communication.
With this research, we obtained data that proves that technology, the use of blogs, forums, social networks
Based on the objectives set, we conducted an online survey with the first conclusion being
has affirmed in the development of this research; the large number of people who adapt to the use of a network
social and the increase in users over time. Out of 100 people, just over 50% have more than 5 years
being part of the network, with Facebook being the main one with 99% of participants.
Of the 100 people, 82% use social media to stay in touch with their friends; in second place,
There are those who use this medium for entertainment, and only 30% use it for professional purposes.
If we take into account the number of users of a social network, and in relation to what could be verified here, the
71% of the sample claims to have between 100 and 1000 friends or contacts, and they tend to stay connected for more than
2 hours a day.
Professional interest groups are the most in demand; 45% of the surveyed individuals.
they indicated that they are subscribed to other people. In smaller proportion, categories such as ecology appear.
Religion. It is with close friends and those closest to them that 65% interact mostly on social media.
Social. It is thus possible to understand that 75% use these means to keep in touch with intimate people.
In the development of this research work, it was evident that the advancement of technology is already something of
day by day, it is logical that the means of access to social networks is also changing rapidly.
Regarding the interview with a blogger, the most noteworthy aspect is her perception of these media.
of communication; its appreciation indicates that, more than as a means of calling something, it is more a means of
massification of information.
Both the bibliographic analysis and the results of the online survey and the personal interview contribute to
to support our hypothesis that social networks, the Internet, and connectivity to these technologies represent
new means to establish and maintain social ties, enrich positions, exchange ideas, and expand the
personal vision towards a global character.
We believe that digital natives have understood the enormous potential of these platforms in all
areas of communication to the point of using them as peaceful tools of political action.
We also maintain that in the future it will be these new media that will ensure freedom of expression and
the intellectual exchange among human beings. Its members constitute a true Global Village and are
aware of their potential for exchanging positions, ideas, values, and ideologies. They use them in all
aspects of daily life, to maintain relationships with family and friends, to meet new acquaintances, to
to entertain and inform oneself, to work, to express oneself, and even to take political action, to rebel and
confronting governments and dictatorships.
Therefore, we highlight its value and weight in the long process towards democratization at a global level. It seems that
this stage has already begun and digital natives have already understood that today 'the weapon is the Network.' (Peregil,
2011)
