Machine Safety Regulations in Mining

This document describes the legal regulations and objectives of protecting the moving parts of machines to prevent accidents. It explains the types of protections such as safety devices, personal protective equipment, and collective protection. It details the exposed points in rotating, pressing, and reciprocating machines, as well as the types of protection for pulleys, gears, shafts, and more.

OBJECTIVE

Raise awareness among all participants of the present course about

the management, preparation, and installation of protection in the
machines and equipment that have moving parts, hot, cold,
cutting and gripping tools to prevent the occurrence of incidents
and accidents during the activities carried out in the Unit.

SCOPE
This procedure applies to all moving parts of
equipment that is exposed in the Mining Unit, that
correspond to fixed or portable equipment, belonging to
to the mining company and/or contractors and companies
Connected.
Machine protections
They are security devices used at points
of transmission, movement or rotation of the
machines as a whole or in any other
team, with the aim of protecting the
people against accidental contact with
parts in motion during their
functioning.

Note 1: The protection of the machine must not

to be considered as an accessory of the equipment,
but as a security device.
Note 2: All protections must be
fixed, preferably with bolts, and
inspect with a recommended frequency
Safety device

They are components that, by themselves,

interconnected or associated with protections,
they reduce the risks of accidents and other damages
to health and are classified as:

a) Electrical commands or safety interfaces

b) Locking devices
c) Security sensors
d) Valves and safety blocks or systems
tires and hydraulics of the same effectiveness
e) Mechanical devices
f) Validation devices
SPC (Collective Protection System)
They are devices, materials, and safety equipment whose purpose is protection.
simultaneously several workers exposed to a certain risk.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
They are devices, materials, and personal clothing intended for each
worker to protect him from one or more risks present at work and
that may threaten your safety and health.
They are classified into:
Head protection
Visual protection
Facial protection
Respiratory Protection
Hearing protection
Hand protection
Foot and leg protection
Safe work clothing (jumpsuit)
Safety harness
Exposed and rolling points and contact points

They are rotating pieces that must not come into contact with other objects.
human contact.

Note:
It is considered enclosed equipment when
this does not allow man's access to
exposed and rolling points of
entrapment.
Sensors or other devices must be installed.

the machine when it is in operation.
The work area where
The machinery is located.
Rotating Equipment
They are equipment powered by a motor for a specific purpose (mills, fans, transmitters,
etc.)
Rotating
Pressing Equipment
They are machines that receive material to compact it through their mechanisms.
(gears, rollers, etc.).
Princes
Alternating Equipment
Alternative movement mechanism, whose repetitive movement in different directions that
allows the operation of equipment such as pumps, locomotives, feed hoppers, etc.
TYPES OF PROTECTION
Protection of rotating parts
The rotating parts must be protected to make contact with personnel as difficult as possible.
In all protection cases, openings or empty spaces should not allow contact.
directly with the moving parts of the machine.
Pulleys / Gears / Belts / Coupling

The sets must be completely protected, the inner and outer parts with a cover.
continue or mesh. The removal must be easy and safe. When the protection is of
large dimensions must be divided into easily dismountable segments for
maintenance. The opening of the mesh (Y) and the distance between the protection and the part
protected (X) must be according to the table:

Distancia - X (mm) Opening Y of the mesh (mm)

X < 50 Y<4
50 is greater than or equal to X and X is less4than≥or Yequal≤to 100

Belt Conveyor
Driving wheels:They are usually already protected, in
cases should be immediately installed the
protection to the wheel. The actuation must follow the
procedure for pulleys and axles.

Movable wheels:The drum of the wheel must be

mandatory protected with a net.

Tensioner pulley for belt or strap:The counterweight of the wheel

the tensor must have lateral protection all around it
perimeter, from the floor to a height of 2.5m. The
counterweights of the tension wheels installed on large
heights must have protection from the project,
also guides that will withstand the course of the counterweight in
in case of a fall. The counterweight must be fully closed.
Axles (fixed cardan, telescope and others)

According to the size of the equipment, the types of protection

they will be:
a. For small-sized shafts/cardan joints, we must
make a semicircular cover, in plate or mesh
metallic with dimensions according to table I, with
brassieres.
b. For large movable axes, a must be made

impossible for the team to have involuntary contact.
c. The removal of this isolation will only be carried out

The removal of this isolation/protection will only be

made with de-energized, locked out equipment and

BAD PRACTICES
Factors to consider in security guards

It should always be considered:

Is the danger zone, located above, accessible from below?

Is the danger area accessible from above the guard?
Is the danger area accessible through one of the guard openings?
Is the danger zone accessible from underneath the guard?
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Use personal protective equipment.

Take the necessary measures to avoid the

entanglement of hair, work clothes or others
objects that the worker could carry (bracelets,
watches, rings, etc.)

Only trained, qualified, and authorized personnel,

Any broken or decommissioned machine must be

signaled,
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Machines and equipment must have stopping devices
in emergencies, in places that are easily accessible and visible.

Sensors or other devices that prevent it must be installed.

unauthorized access to the machine while it is in operation.

Ensure training in machine instructions and

equipment to raise awareness about exposed and moving parts.

Removing the guard or protection must be done with authorization.

and with the equipment disconnected, labeled, and locked out

The assembly and disassembly operations must be carried out

with qualified personnel and proven experience.

Always maintain the order and cleanliness of the workplace.

MANAGEMENT OF CONSEQUENCES
Under no circumstances should situations that could jeopardize be allowed.
physical integrity of workers, the environment, the heritage or the image of the
organization.

Examples of serious offenses:

Expose or expose people to

machines and equipment without the due
protections
Improvising unapproved protections.
Make a device inoperative
security protection.
Remove the protection and do not put it back on
proper form.
Bypass security systems.
RIGHT TO SAY NO
Remember, every worker has the right to refuse the activity if the
safety conditions put at risk your integrity and that of your
comrades.
Security is non-negotiable
