MT271 : StatisticsforNon − Majors

TUTORIAL SHEET NO.1
1. The score of 50 students in one of their Mathematics tests were recorded
as follows:

55 34 49 73 81 38 66 71 63 56
47 52 39 75 61 56 50 48 65 73
54 62 58 46 48 35 76 85 68 55
66 72 69 58 54 46 49 58 76 67
77 44 59 68 36 36 48 47 58 73

Construct the frequency distribution using six classes with the lower
limit of the first interval being 30. The distribution should include the
relative frequencies.

2. The time taken in hours to the failure of 50 specimens of a metal

subjected to the fatique failure tests are as shown. Form a frequency
distribution having 8 classes and unequal class intervals for these data.

28 22 23 20 12 24 37 28 21 25
21 14 30 23 27 13 23 7 26 19
24 22 26 3 21 24 28 40 27 24
20 25 23 26 47 21 29 26 22 33
27 9 13 35 20 16 20 25 18 22

Draw a histogram for the frequency distribution formulated.

3. Forty statistical values were collected from a certain engineering firm

and the results (in thousands of dollars)were as given below:

1.8 2.3 10.0 30.0 1.2 4.9 2.0 5.1 8.1 40.1
1.3 2.5 3.6 1.8 2.4 7.6 3.1 8.5 6.5 6.2
1.2 2.8 4.5 6.1 7.8 3.2 2.8 6.1 3.8 4.9
19.6 1.7 8.6 6.4 5.2 4.1 3.1 8.1 6.8 5.8

(a) Construct a frequency distribution with five classes only. Start

with the lower limit of 1.0
MT 271 SEM2 2009/2010 UDSM 2

(b) Draw the Histogram

(c) Draw the Cumulative frequency polygon (OGIVE)

4. Using the frequency distribution in (1), compute the following:

(a) The mean, median and modal score of students

(b) The mean absolute deviation.

5. With reference to the frequency tables obtained in (1) and (3) above

(a) Compute the quartile deviation and the standard deviation of the
data.
(b) Comment on the best measure of dispersion for these two data
sets.

6. The absolute errors from two different measuring balances for the past
eight days were recorded in grams as follows:

Balance A: 1.3 2.1 0.9 4.2 1.1 2.3 0.7 3.2

Balance B: 0.8 1.8 2.7 4.2 1.9 0.9 4.7 3.7

As an engineer, suggest which of the two balances may be considered

fairly consistent?
